The objectives and indicators provide feedback about productivity in order to help workers perform more effectively. Each indicator should have a particular quantitative level of performance. Objective 1: maintain a high standard of quality, can be redefined to a more precise objective by clearly defining quality. Indicator 1.1 should be redefined to clearly explain the quantitative level of performance of dollar value of returned defective merchandise.
2. Based on what you know about performance appraisal and ProMES, what are the most important features of the ProMES system? Indicate how SRU’s current ProMES system does or does not …show more content…
abide by these important features.
A ProMES system should have a design team responsible for developing the measurement and feedback system, clearly defined objectives and quantitative indicators to be used for feedback on the objectives, contingencies that are a form of graphic utility function that relates an amount or measure of an indicator to a value for the organization, and a feedback system that allows people to provide continuous feedback over time. SRU’s current ProMES system abides by some of the important features, it has well defined objectives and indicators, and contingencies. However, SRU’s ProMES system lacks some key features such as an active design team and a feedback system.
3. Mr. Rainer has agreed to make changes to his current ProMES system but has decided that he doesn’t want any of his employees to be involved with the process since he does not want to lose their productivity from their normal work duties. Do you agree with his decision, why or why not? If not, how would you go about trying to convince Mr. Rainer that some form of employee participation is important?
I do not agree with Mr. Rainer’s decision because a good design team involves employees from the work unit that will ultimately use the system. I would convince Mr. Rainer to include employees because they are the people on the ground and with the help of a ProMES facilitator, they stand a better chance of coming up with unique and clearly defined objectives and quantitative indicators. The employees will be motivated to work towards achieving their objectives, hence, improving their unit productivity and overall performance.
4. Mr. Rainer has seen his ProMES system provide worse and worse results for the last couple of years leading him to question whether ProMES is a productive tool. Do you agree with this perspective? If not, how can you convince him that ProMES should be continued?
I do not agree with this perspective.
Research with ProMES indicates that it is a highly effective method for improving performance while also improving job satisfaction and reducing job stress.89 ProMES is a productive tool that give workers precise performance information they need to increase their productivity and this gives them a sense of ownership and empowerment.
5. What is your assessment of the overall performance of SRU’s 2nd quarter? How useful is an overall effectiveness score when trying to integrate all data? Based on the performance data and contingency graphs for the 2nd quarter, how well did SRU perform on the indicators? Where is there room for improvement?
My assessment of the overall performance of SRU’s 2nd quarter is poor. The overall effectiveness score is -61 which indicates that the overall performance is poor and falls below the minimum level of acceptable performance. The overall effectiveness score is useful when trying to integrate all data because it helps to identify priorities for improvement and provides the index of overall productivity. There is room for improvement in cost control, this being the difference between the actual and planned
budget.
6. Make one recommendation to Mr. Rainer and SRU regarding where they would see the most gain in improvement for the next quarter. What specific piece(s) of information were most informative in leading you to this recommendation? Explain your answer.
In my opinion SRU would see the most gain in improvement for the next quarter if they maintained a high level of order processing efficiency. This will improve overall effectiveness and productivity.
