Running Head: OBSERVATION ACTIVITY
2
On November 3, I went to the first round of Nazzy Idol to observe an all campus activity. I arrived a few minutes early, and tried to take a seat, but was told that anyone not in the competition had to wait until exactly 7pm to enter. I, and other students who were early, waited in the foyer of the Ruth Cameron Auditorium. I observed that most people had arrived with at least one friend. While waiting in the Foyer, no one was standing in the middle of the room, but against the walls or in front of the doors. When we were able to go into the RCA, music was playing and many people flooded through the doors right away. The majority of the students flocked to the middle section of seats. There were six duets that evening.
The judges included Assistant Chaplain J.D., President Corlis McGee, Resident
Director and Gospel Choir Director Priscilla, and Vice President of Student Development and
Retention Jeff Kirksey. I noted that they sat (from left to right) in this order: Priscilla, Jeff
Kirksey, Corlis McGee, J.D. I noticed that groups of people who sat together seemed more likely to cheer for someone together. I also perceived a sense of general “popularity” that certain contestants had, due to the amount of people who cheered for them before they began to sing at all. It seemed like the regular cliques (which seem to be based on people who are on the same team(s) or in the same club(s), by ethnic or cultural similarities, and in general seem to be based on people who are alike) were sitting together and didn’t intermingle very much. The judges seemed to generally say everyone did very well, and didn’t tell anyone that they did badly, even when I and my friends had comments about being unimpressed by a particular duet.
Probably the most interesting thing that I

Boyd and Richardson found that when co-operation levels were high in a group, the group was more likely to flourish and be successful. This supports the theory since it shows that individuals are influenced by others in a group. More support comes from Marsh et al, who suggested that the uncivilised behaviour seen during football matches and sports events is actually highly ritualised behaviour. He supports the theory and says that individuals act and conform to the roles expected of them. However, the theory has been criticised by many since psychologists often argue that it is impossible for groups to form in a normless environment. Many norms are often present before the group collects and there is a common sense of…

Some were holding champagne glass or a whiskey glass. The bell rung and every person knew that it was time to go to their seats. The performance I attended was called La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, and it was played for the last time of this opera season, so the place was sold out. The cast was made up of some of the most known opera singers, Carmen Giannattasio, James Courtney, Atalla Ayan, and many others.…

The concert I went to was called “Afternoon Chamber Music.” Even thought I left my house early, I still managed to arrive 10 minutes late. When I finally found the correct room, I had to wait outside a few minutes until one of the acts was over. When I finally got inside, the small room seemed to be packed, but I managed to find an empty seat in the front row. The sitting arrangements were the basic for any performances, same as in all the lecture class rooms. Most of the people there had notebooks out, sign that they were there for research project and not necessarily for the enjoyment of music.…

As an avid sports fan, there is nothing more exciting than going to a sporting event of my favorite team. To be surrounded by other sports fans who are rooting for the same team as you brings a sense of togetherness. The feeling of "this is our team" and "if they win I win" brings all sports fans together. However, even with this togetherness bond between sports fans, they can be classified into four distinct categories.…

Even though the players were in two different teams playing against each other, the crowds didn’t seem to think so. For the first time at a football match that I have seen people from all countries supporting not just their teams, but the other team as well, no matter which side they were on. Everyone was joining into the chants no matter which country they were from or were supporting. I, being a football fan, was sitting in a huge group of supporters wearing red supporting The Legends, and what really got my attention was that The Legends fans were joining the Dream Teams’ chants and The Legends crowd…
