Running Head: OBSERVATION ACTIVITY
2
On November 3, I went to the first round of Nazzy Idol to observe an all campus activity. I arrived a few minutes early, and tried to take a seat, but was told that anyone not in the competition had to wait until exactly 7pm to enter. I, and other students who were early, waited in the foyer of the Ruth Cameron Auditorium. I observed that most people had arrived with at least one friend. While waiting in the Foyer, no one was standing in the middle of the room, but against the walls or in front of the doors. When we were able to go into the RCA, music was playing and many people flooded through the doors right away. The majority of the students flocked to the middle section of seats. There were six duets that evening.
The judges included Assistant Chaplain J.D., President Corlis McGee, Resident
Director and Gospel Choir Director Priscilla, and Vice President of Student Development and
Retention Jeff Kirksey. I noted that they sat (from left to right) in this order: Priscilla, Jeff
Kirksey, Corlis McGee, J.D. I noticed that groups of people who sat together seemed more likely to cheer for someone together. I also perceived a sense of general “popularity” that certain contestants had, due to the amount of people who cheered for them before they began to sing at all. It seemed like the regular cliques (which seem to be based on people who are on the same team(s) or in the same club(s), by ethnic or cultural similarities, and in general seem to be based on people who are alike) were sitting together and didn’t intermingle very much. The judges seemed to generally say everyone did very well, and didn’t tell anyone that they did badly, even when I and my friends had comments about being unimpressed by a particular duet.
Probably the most interesting thing that I
