Obstacles In Social Work

“All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” -Walt Disney. Many, if not all, success stories begin with obstacles. An obstacle is something that blocks, prevents, or hinders one’s way of progress. Before one can have a success story, they must face at least one obstacle. My obstacle was waiting until the last minute to do my volunteer hours for Tennessee Promise. As a high school student I was never really taught time management. When it came to having things turned in on time, I would procrastinate until the last minute. The deadline to have my hours done seemed like it was so far away, little did I know. As the summer progressed my thought about school and becoming an adult slowly faded. The emails kept coming,
Some humans depend on the help of others. A baby depends on the help of a parent or guardian to feed them, bathe them, and take care of them. An ill adult could depend on the help of someone to guide them such as social worker, or some type of therapist. An elderly person could depend on the help of a caregiver. A dog is the same way, it depends on the care of someone else. Volunteering at the animal shelter helped me to realize that my undecided thought of becoming a Social Worker is what I wanted to do for my career. A Social Worker is someone that helps others. As I helped the dogs at the animal shelter, I realized that they do not have a voice, and that some humans do not have one as well. I knew then that I wanted to be someone that helped others. Someone that helped people to find their voice. At the end of the day, I went home, turned my hours in a did some more research on how to become a social worker. Volunteering at Hardeman County Animal Shelter that day not only taught me to not wait until the last minute to do something that depends on my future, but that not everyone has a voice. I am now a college student, that is studying in Social Sciences, and volunteering at the shelter when I am able to. In that case, “The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” – H.
