The Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley-Holland is a novel written towards students who have interests in the Norse Gods. The book is a compilation of stories told in Norse mythology. The stories range from Ragnarok to creation. This particular method of storytelling approaches to those who want to understand north mythology without reading lecture notes. Kevin Crossley-Holland appeals to his intended audience superbly. It flows more as a pleasure read than an assigned reading. As a student, I can say as part of the targeted audience that it is written well for students. Kevin Crossley-Holland himself obviously has a strong understanding of these myths. The story of Adam and Eve is one of the most culturally important and known stories in the Bible regarding the origin of mankind. It’s generally followed by Judeo-Christians but is also grasped by other religious views, though many tend to overlook minor key details that may alter the whole interpretation. First, God created a man named Adam to primarily tend to the garden he planted in Eden. There were many trees in the garden that happened to contain two special types of trees. God allowed Adam to eat from any tree he wished, except from one specific tree. Then, God created a woman to accompany Adam who automatically became his wife. The woman came across a serpent she claimed to have deceived her. In actuality, the serpent simply told her a fact that is later proven correct with the help of her temptation. After Adam and the woman both consumed fruit from the forbidden tree, they realized that they were naked and tried to hide from God. God came to find that Adam and the woman ate from the forbidden tree because they suddenly were full of knowledge. God punished the serpent, Adam, and the woman for their disobedience. He then banished them not as another punishment but to help them avoid temptation again. Within the controversial context of the story lie theoretical themes that can be analyzed by existentialism and the Post-Freudian psychoanalytic theory of eros, thanatos, and the Oedipal Conflict. The story can be viewed using the Oedipal Conflict as God plays the role of both the mother and father figure while Adam and Eve play the role of the rebellious children. Along with this conflict, the characters of the story demonstrate existentialism qualities and carry out actions that they are either eros or thanatos.…

In Genesis 3:16-20 God gives separate consequences to man and woman. For women God increased pain during child birth and also that women cannot have power over their husbands. This also tells us that women will desire to be in a man’s position but will never acquire it because Eve made the decision of deceiving Adam into eating the apple. For man God cursed the ground from which he will have to work very hard to gain food. God also cursed the ground with weeds and thorns which kill other plants and make it even harder to grow food. God used a sense of irony with the last curse for man. He first explained that man came from the ground and that man will have to work the ground his whole life to keep him and his family alive until the man dies returning to the ground.…

These two men were condemned for the exact same reason: they let their greed overpower every other feeling they had. ““You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman “For God knows that when you eat from it (the tree of knowledge) your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:4-5). While it was not Adam who though of eating from the tree, he did make the conscious decision to fall victim to the inescapable greed that all humans are plagued with. Equality 7-2521 fell to the same greed that Adam had, but towards another party, himself. In the society that Equality 7-2521 lives, there is no singular “I”, there is only “we”. In fact, the punishment for the denial of the belief that they have adopted, “What is not done collectively cannot be good” (Rand 73), is death. When Equality 7-2521 discovers a hole that leads down to a railway station from the “Unspeakable Times”, he finds himself drawn to it. By deciding not to kill Adam and Eve, he affirms the serpent’s assertion. However, the expulsion signifies the establishment of man’s free will, and sets the course for the whole bible as the battle of man against himself.…

For the past two-thousand years, the Book of Genesis has served as work of literature to the western civilization. Whether people believed in the Bible or not, the Book of Genesis tell stories they talk about having good morals, teaching live-learned lessons and overall it gives a glimpse of how the first human being acted when the world was developing and how they handle problems and situations. However, even though the book of Genesis shows a tone of life long morals, Genesis also shows the different sides of humans. Genesis shows how human can be deceitful, evil, and disobedient to authority figures. But these traits with humans were rarely displayed by man, but mostly by woman.
