1. One way to interpret The Odyssey is as an allegory for life's journey. In an organized essay, describe how two of Odysseus's adventures can be interpreted in this light. What is symbolic about each? What lessons can we learn through Odysseus as he makes his way home? Use the organizer and class discussion notes as a resource. 2. The concept of a hero has been interpreted in many ways throughout the ages. One literary hero who seems to stand the test of time is Odysseus. In an organized essay, write about two of Odysseus's traits that, you feel, make him a hero. Explain in your Intro. & Conclusion how each of these traits is also seen as heroic even in today's world.
3. The Greeks honor and value balance as a way to live a fulfilled, harmonious life. In what ways does The Odyssey illustrate this concept? (Think of Homer’s plot and form when addressing this prompt). Share two examples of this concept in the poem and analyze what this reveals about their view of life in general.
4. As we studied in depth, the Hero's Journey is comprised of three main stages: the Separation , the Initiation, and the Return. In an organized essay, analyze The Odyssey as it relates to the Hero's Journey archetype. Chart the course of Odyssues OR Telemachus as he makes his way from Ithaca and back and make specific connections to the Hero's Journey. Use pertinent terms to show your knowledge of each (mentor, threshold, abyss, atonement, etc.).What is his call? What are his challenges and temptations? How is he transformed upon his return home?
