Waking Up For some people, they live there lives asleep, they don’t realize what is in front of them. Once they do wake up they realize the truth is right in front of them. It might not be straightforward but there is a deeper meaning to finding out the truth. People go through tragedies, which makes them awaken to find out the truth. In Oedipus the King, A Doll’s House, and Fences, Oedipus, Nora and Corey experience an awakening from secondary characters through their interactions.
Oedipus, the main character in Oedipus the King by Sophocles awakens when he realizes the truth has been in front of him the whole time. There is a plague destroying the city of Thebes, Oedipus learns that the killer of Laius needs to be prosecuted so Thebes can be restored. Oedipus wants to find out who murderer of Laius and save the city. As Oedipus slowly gathers information, he awakens by a horrifying realization. Oedipus slowly awakens when Teiresias informs him that he killed Laius, realizing that his murder is the outcome of his city in a plague. A prophecy was revealed that Oedipus would kill his own father and marry his own mother. Iocaste realizes the sudden truth, unfortunately knowing that Oedipus is her son and Laius is his father. She hangs herself; Oedipus comes across her body and realizes the truth gouging out his eyes. “Let me purge my father’s Thebes of the pollution/ Of my living here, and go out to the wild hills, (Scene IV 750). Oedipus awakens from the truth and exile from his city in order for it to be saved.
In Fences, Cory is awakened when he returns home after his father’s death. There is tension between Troy and Cory’s relationship as father and son. Troy resented his son because he couldn’t play professional baseball and he wouldn’t let Cory play football.
