In “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles, it has the reader experience a great amount of empathy for Oedipus. Empathy is important as it helps people understand someone else’s pain or problems. It helps people be able to relate to one another and that happens in “Oedipus the King”. As the reader gets farther into the story and the truth about Oedipus comes out, they are able to empathize with him. In this line, it’s easy to empathize with Oedipus, “O, O, O, they will all come, all come out clearly! Light of the sun, let me 1365 look upon you no more after today! I who first saw the light bred of a match accursed and accursed in my living with them I lived with, cursed in my killing”. Oedipus just realized that the prophecy of him killing his father and having an incestuous relationship with his mother has come true. The empathy the reader feels is strong because they know they would be devastated just like Oedipus if they were in his shoes. It helps as this happening was all out of Oedipus hands. He did not want this to happen and didn’t act intentionally as to help the prophecy come true. “Oedipus the King” brings a staggering amount of empathy to the surface which is good because it helps the reader to be able to relate to
