Loneliness in Of Mice and Men
Affected with, characterized by, or causing a depressing feeling of being alone. This is the definition of loneliness and also what many of the characters were feeling throughout the book. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses loneliness to demonstrate that companionship contributes to being happy in life. Curley’s wife is lonely throughout the story which leads her to trouble and ultimately her death. I think Curley’s wife is lonely because she has no one to talk to and she feels like she could of had a better life if she wasn’t married to Curley. “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.” (86) Since Curley’s wife is lonely, she roams around trying to find companionship, but this leads to trouble. “I get lonely,” she said. You can talk to people, but I can't talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad.” (87) I think Curley's wife regrets some decisions in her life because now she is unhappy and lonely. I feel like she also wants the attention but others see her as just trouble so they stay away and don't talk to her. Because Curley's wife is lonely, it affects her in many different ways and leads her to trouble, ultimately ending in her death. Candy feels lonely because his closest companion was taken away from him. Candy has had his dog for so long, he is emotionally connected to it. When his dg is taken from him, killed, he feels very lonely. “He said miserably, “You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They say he wasn't no good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here I wisht sombodyd shoot me!” (60) Since Candy was crippled he couldn't do the same work as others so he probably felt left out, but he always had his dog as a companion. When George and Lennie were talking about buying the farm, Candy seemed interested too. I think he wanted to help buy the farm because he didn't want to be lonely anymore. “When Candy spoke they both jumped as though they had been caught doing something
