1) Plot Summary
A. Exposition
During the exposition, readers are introduced to George and Lennie as they arrive at their next job after past events. The rest of the characters are presented as the duo begins their work. Candy is an aging ranch handyman that wishes to share a piece of George and Lennie’s dream of owning their own farm, Slim is the most respected worker at the ranch with the most wisdom, Crooks is a black stable-hand that is bitter with his status, and Carlson fills out the rest of the ranch workers. Curley is the Boss’s son and is extremely aggressive towards men of bigger size than him. Meanwhile, his wife is a flirtatious, lonely wreck that longs for companionship. Throughout the exposition, all of the characters’ ambitions and dreams of a better life are shown to the reader. The whole story takes place in a ranch during the mid-1930s, or during the Great Depression when people were desperate for work. The mood is dreary and sad, as the characters mostly have nothing to be happy about.

Later on, while George and the rest of the ranch hands visit the town without Lennie, Curley’s wife has a conversation with Lennie out of sheer loneliness. She lets him touch her hair. Lennie panics when Curley’s wife fidgets too much and accidentally breaks her neck, killing her in the process. He runs away to the place George told him to wait at if trouble arose in the beginning of the story. When the rest of the men go back to the ranch and find Curley’s wife dead, Curley and Carlson go on a lynching party to find Lennie while George and Slim accompany them grimly.
C. Climax
George meets up with Lennie at their secret location. Realizing what Curley would do to Lennie if he caught him, George solemnly and
