The significance and role of minor characters in Of Mice and Men

The book 'Of Mice and Men' mainly illustrates the ranch life of Lennie and George and the conflicts between Lennie and other workers. The author uses details of their experience to demonstrate the helplessness and the powerlessness of the victims of the Great Depression and the falsity of American dream.

The author's portrayal of Crooks' living environment allows him to show the unfairness of the way the American society discriminate the black. Crooks 'had his bunk in the harness room' and his bunk was made up of 'a long bed filled with straw'. His medicine bottles were 'both for himself and for the horses'.     Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck’s naturalistic novella, is a tragic tale of two men traveling together in the hardships of the Great Deal. Frequently throughout the book Steinbeck indirectly critiques the flaws that the Great Deal contained.     Crooks is isolated because of his skin colour, "S'pose you couldn't go in the bunkhouse and play rummy cause you was black", he is rejected by his fellow workers and isn’t allowed to sleep in the bunkhouse, he is forced to sleep out in the stable with all the animals because that is how low he is considered within the community because he is black and racism was very bad during the 1930’s.
