These two men have a friendship that no one had in this time period. George was Lennie’s care taker and when Lennie made a huge mistake George put him out of trouble by murdering him.
Although the irony of killing his best friend, George did what was right for both Lennie and himself. Since the men were after Lennie to fight and kill him, George stopped the fact that Lennie would’ve fought back and hurt more people then he already has every time Lennie tried to defend himself. In past scenarios Lennie has injured many people and animals obliviously simply because he doesn’t know his own strength. “Lennie took his hands away from his face and looked about for George, and Curley slashed at his eyes. The big face was covered in blood.
George yelled again, “”I said get him””. Curley’s fist was swinging when Lennie’s fist reached for it. The next minute Curley was flopping lie a fish on a close line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie’s big hand” (63) Lennie had no idea of his own strength and just wanted Curley to stop beating on him which would’ve happened if all these men were going after him. ““”let go,”” she cried “”You let go!” Lennie was in panic. His face was contorted. She screamed then and
Lennie’s other hand covered her mouth and nose.”(91) This too shows that to stop Curley’s wife from yelling, he meant to make her stopped. But since he didn’t know his own strength his large hands over powered her nose and mouth and he suffocated her. He was defending himself from getting in trouble and just caused more. George stopped many more injuries from occurring by killing Lennie thus making it the right thing to do.
