George, the Everyman, is pierced by companionship’s double-edged sword because of Lennie’s infamous actions that have led to the pair’s constant look for work and vulnerability to plights that wouldn’t affect the average man. Steinbeck illustrates the trouble Lennie has caused numerous times throughout the novel, but George’s true feelings about the situation are most accurately portrayed in the beginning of the novel. George tells Lennie, “ ‘God a’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy… You can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get’ ” (Steinbeck 11). Lennie Small has a very symbolic importance in the novel Of Mice and Men. In the novel George Milton and Lennie Small both migrant workers pursue their dream of someday owning their own ranch by travelling around working as ranch hands to earn a living. The dream they share is to be able to "live off the fat of the land,". Lennie Small is a very complex character, although he may not appear to be at first glance. Lennie is the most interesting character in the novel because he differs from the other is many ways. Lennie Small ironically is a man of large stature and is very strong. He is child-like in his emotions and has a diminished mental capacity. Lennie's feelings are much like that of a normal person when you take into consideration that he is mentally retarded. One of Lennie's biggest concerns is that of a continued friendship with George. Throughout the novel their friendship is affirmed as Lennie states, "Because…… because I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you,". Lennie has a distrust of people except for George. Also, Lennie is not always sure about what is right and what is wrong; he relies on George to make the distinction for him. Lennie lacks the understanding that his actions have consequences. This is seen when he holds on to his pet mouse so tightly that he kills it. Lennie walks his way through life completely oblivious to the dangers of the world holding on to the dream of someday owning a farm with his best friend George.…

The strong always overpower the weak. Throughout John Steinbeck’s famous novel, “Of Mice and Men,” He tries to express in many ways as possible that the strong will always overrule the weak no matter what. And Lennie’s puppy is a great representation of that one theme. Lennie is the type of guy who isn’t always the best to be around, especially is your small and soft as fur. Because of the fact that Lennie isn’t able to recognize his physical prowess, he tends to kill a lot of animals and objects throughout nature. As George and Lennie are in the bunkhouse, George states; “You not to pet that pup so much or ya might kill em.” (pg. 55) This quote is very significant because just as Lennie is dependent…

God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an' work, an' no trouble…”(11) George has to constantly deal with Lennie and that is what gives George distress. The fact that Lennie is able to put all of his troubles on George, makes George have a much more troublesome life. Lennie doesn’t have to take on the weight as much as George because George is the person who takes it on himself. What George is saying is that Lennie constantly gives him a large amount of concern and without Lennie, he would’ve have a much easier and better life. George lives a more difficult life than Lennie because of how much trouble Lennie has given him. Another reason why George has a more difficult life than Lennie, is that George has decided to kill his own best friend. In specific, when George finds Lennie in the brush after Lennie had killed Curley’s wife, he “...raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. Lennie's death and how he dies is very sad. Leading up to Lennie's death, and even before they went to the ranch, George told Lennie that if he ever does something bad he should go to the pond and George will find him. This is how George knew where Lennie had went to. The second reason how Steinbeck references Lennie's death is by writing about Carlson killing Candy's dog. Carlson stated that if you shoot them right where the spine connects to the head, they will not even feel it. This was exactly where George had shot Lennie in the head. Steinbeck also writes about how Candy said he should have shot his dog himself. This is just like how George stood up and went to find Lennie and kill him. George had taken the responsibility for Lennie's…

We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us...”(p.14) George says this meaning that he cares about Lennie, and Lennie cares about him, they both look after each other in different ways. They are not just men finding jobs that don’t have anyone to care about them or anyone to care about. George and Lennie are friends that will always be there for each other through bad and good.
