Throughout the story, Offred narrates the story by taking us through every event she comes across and constantly tell us flashbacks of her family and past. The flashbacks helped her stay sane compared to the other handmaids who are brainwashed into the world of Gilead. Not only that but it helped the reader understand the narrator’s mind and the character she builds.
