Oil Spills - How It Affects Our World
S.O.S.E Script

For more than 100 years, oils spills have been affecting most of our oceans, with a lot of oil pollution. This is a major problem and occurs around most of the world and sometimes in the same ocean a numerous amount of times. Oil spills, not only affect our oceans beauty but affect the marine life as well. But sometimes there is no way to prevent oil spills. A majority of oils spills are spilt into the oceans due to harsh water conditions or a hurricane. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 200 million gallons of used oil are disposed of improperly each year. This then impacts our marine life; lowering the population of most animals and even killing of a whole species.
Oil spills is considered one of the major globalization problems occurring in most oceans and seas around the entire world. An oils spill is when a large amount of oil is spilt either by accident or on purpose is tipped into the oceans. Indeed, causing the oceans to be polluted and un-healthy anymore. Natural disasters, like hurricanes, may cause an oil spill. The strength of a hurricane can cause an oil tanker to flip over, pouring every bit of oil out. Leaving our oceans polluted with a large amount of oil. But don’t be fooled; mostly, oil spills are caused by humans.
Our marine life is the main thing that oil spills affect. When an animal is affected by a large amount of oil, this can cause the animal to either get a disease or die. Oil makes the marine life very sick and is unable to cope with oil being in their usual living environment. But also our oceans and seas are affected by this problem. This turns our healthy and beautiful oceans into a very dirty an unhealthy environment for our marine life to live in. Animals may die either by getting hypothermia, then causing their body temperature to become very low. Oil can also kill an animal by blinding it. Animals are unable to see any more and can be a suitable target for predators.

The Gulf Oil Spill took place on the Deepwater Horizon/BP MC252 drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico which had an explosion and killed 11 workers and this caused the drilling platform to sink. The explosion caused oil to leak into the Gulf of Mexico and nearly 134 million gallons of oil was released into the Gulf. Oil traveled all the way to the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. The marine life was severely depleted; the oil killed marine life, birds, and other animals who depend on the Gulf. The Oil Spill, due to the mismanaged oil drilling by British Petroleum (BP), in the Gulf of Mexico, has turned into one of the worst environmental disasters to happen to an ocean ecosystem of all time. Although many people only notice the effects on the hydrosphere, which include the oil going almost a mile deep under the sea, destroying the sediment and rock on the ocean floor, as well as disrupting coastal patterns, many have not realized the drastic effects on the biosphere because of this catastrophic event. The BP oil spill is viewed as the largest decimation of ocean wild life known to man, as well as also killing human lives in the process. Entire ecosystems have been affected in the process, harming animals like whales, dolphins, fish species, pelicans, seagulls, sea turtles, etc., several of which are already endangered. This destruction of wildlife has also lead to a slowdown in many fishing industries, further affecting human life, and causing severe poverty for those who rely on such business to survive. Even if some of the animals did survive, the trauma faced from this experience will lead to reproductive problems, or most likely, death. Even though life is returning back to the Gulf, the damage done can never be replaced, and the area will never be the same.…

This Gulf Oil Spill happened to have negative effects on countless animals. For example, birds were layered with sheets of oil, consuming oil, and food deprived. “Oil coated birds’ feathers, causing birds to lose their buoyancy and the ability to regulate body temperature” ("How Does the BP Oil Spill Impact Wildlife and Habitat? - National Wildlife Federation."). Since the birds then cannot regulate body temperature, the birds have a high chance of overheating or becoming very cold. This exposes the birds to dangerous situations that could and are lethal. Unable to fly, the birds cannot catch fish swimming in the water therefore; the birds are deprived of food. Hungry, the birds will try to oust the oil from its feathers, resulting in consuming the oil, which then is harmful to the digestive system. As you can see in the photograph below, the bird is coated in oil and has oil…

Most people would say that oil has only a bad effect on the environment it does but not for all the reasons you think. Of course oil causes pollution and destroys our ozone layer however it also a participating factor towards climate change, it helps in making the north and south poles smaller and the oceans bigger. Oil is also a toxin in the oil wells that kills animals, wildlife and the ecosystem that may never be the same again. Nevertheless, oil does have its positive impacts on the environment. When an oil spill occurs obviously the ocean wild life and the ecosystems are damaged for months on end however when oil is spilt in the ocean it can also locate significant deposits of oil. Also because there has been very large oil spills, not regularly but oil spills that take months to clean up, organisms have adapted and have learnt to feed on these oil spills. The oddest thing about the organisms is also the fact that they didn’t just…

Oil production is also a large source of water pollution. One recent oil pollution incident was the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This massive oil spill flowed for almost three months after the explosion and sinking of the rig in April 2010. The oil slick was so large satellites could see the spread of oil. This water pollution catastrophe caused an extreme rise in death rates in the marine, bird, and wetland species. The beaches, estuaries, and wetlands were covered with a thick oily material. The Deepwater Horizon spill is considered the worst oil spill in history. Many other, smaller spills occur regularly. Wells have leaks that seep into the surrounding soil and water. Underground cavern reservoirs leach through soil to the surface or to water. Water contaminated by oil can not be consumed or used. Animals suffer as the oil coats their bodies making them unable to fly, swim, or breathe. A new worst oil spill could happen at any time. Precautions must be taken to ensure the water quality remains for the…
