Okahandja Lessons Analysis

Working within a public place can be challenging. The hundreds of different types of people that walk through the doors daily will astound you. They all vary by race, ethnicity, gender, and also the way their bodies look. In “Okahandja Lessons” by Emily Rapp she struggled with how she viewed herself, and how she thought others viewed her. With me, I struggle on how I instantly look at someone and a million thoughts run through my head. I am a judgmental person. I start my work day off on a set routine schedule. I lounge around and relax as much as possible before jumping up and throwing on my work uniform. I proceed then to groom my hair, tac on my name badge, and lace up my tennis shoes. While I am in the middle of this process I cannot help but to think in my head “I wish I did not have to work today.” As I walk out the door, I
I instantly think in my head “I know that he/she is about to pay for this with a food stamp (EBT) card.” An EBT card is designed for the shopper to hopefully make better food choices and options. Most of the customers using them buy loads and loads of junk food. Also many of these customers will use the little bit of money they possess and purchase things they do not need for instance, tobacco products or alcohol. There are also some incidents where customers will use WIC vouchers. These vouchers are for when a woman is pregnant or has a young infant. With these vouchers, you may receive different items for free including: wheat bread, eggs, milk, baby formula, produce, etc. With doing these you have to be precise and careful. This also means that in doing WIC orders they are extremely time consuming. As a customer approaches my line and hands me a WIC voucher I immediately want to roll my eyes to the back of my head. As I proceed with the order I notice that most of the women receiving help through WIC are young women. Some look unkempt, messy, and even
