“Old before my time” written by Kerry and Hayley Okines is an inspiring, captivating, true story about a very extraordinary girl. Hayley Okines has one of the rarest conditions in the world, affecting only one out of eight million children. This is called Hutcherson-Gilford Progeria. Progeria is an extremely rare genetic condition which causes children to age eight times faster than the average human. But Hayley is not like any other human. She is stronger. Already at the age of 13, the equivalent of 104 in Progeria years, she has one things that even adults have not had the chance to do. Like meeting her favourite celebrities, Justin Bieber and Kylie Minogue, accepting an award from Prince Charles and even travelling all the way to France to swim with the dolphins courtesy of Steve Irwin himself. But what makes Hayley even more extraordinary is that, in 2009, she completed a triple drug trial in America that will not only save her life, but others as well.
Hayley Okines possesses one of the most strongest life forces anyone will ever encounter; Hope. The theme of this book, I think, is that hope makes you stronger. Throughout the novel and various different documentaries I have watch about Hayley, I have noticed that she never feels sorry for herself. For Hayley, her progeria was never a burden that she felt she was punished with, but a gift. “I never wished I didn’t have progeria,” says Hayley. But she did keep hoping that there was a cure. Not just for her sake but for her best friend Maddie. For example, Hayley was talking about a dream she had when she was younger… “As soon as we took the cure, we all of a sudden just grew up. It was asif we never had progeria, as if it was magic.” Hayley never gave up on this hope and that is what made her stronger.
Another significant aspect that I read about in ‘Old before my time’ was the way society had to Hayley and other
