Old Mill Park was the former site of Longmont’s second flour mill. It was later dedicated on August 1, 1976 as a park for historical and educational purposes. The park contains 2 log cabins, a milk hut, a small garden, and a pond.
The Longmont Flour Mill was operated by J.W Denio and was also known as The Denio-Barr Mill. The mill, along with a grain elevator, completely burned down in 1934. The estimated damage at the time was around $100,000!
The oldest cabin on the property is The Affolter Cabin. It was built in by a Swedish immigrant, Jacob Affolter, in 1861 near Haystack Mountain. It is the oldest existent cabin in Boulder County! The home was larger than I would expect a log cabin from the mid 1800’s to be, and after doing some research, I learned that because of its large size it became the first meeting house in the area. …show more content…
It was built in 1890 and was part of a hunting and fishing resort near Lyons. The cabin had to be disassembled somewhere in the 1950’s, due to Button Rock Damn being built. It was later reassembled in 1980 and dedicated to the park.
The third structure on the property was The Hauck Milk House. It was built in 1860 by German immigrant, Robert A. Hauck, outside of Longmont in Weld County on land that was given to him by Chief Niwot. The house was moved stone by stone and reassembled in the park. Although I could not find much on the history of Hauck Milk House, I did find that Hauck helped build one of the first cabins in Boulder City as well as co-founded the first rural school in
