Sears Modern Home Case Study
-1913) Sears houses are rare finds in Chicago and its suburbs.

Part of the reason is that Sears simply didn't sell as many kit houses in that time period, as the Modern Homes business was still getting off the ground. I think another reason is that houses built from 1908-1913 in the older suburbs tended to be located in areas that were part of of suburban downtown redevelopment efforts and were consequently razed. I've found pre-1913 Sears houses in places like the Norwood Park neighborhood of Chicago, Des Plaines, Woodstock, and now, Itasca.

516 N. Arlington Heights Road, Itasca.

111 is not the original one. It was removed at some point and then re-added years later.

If you are looking carefully, you might have noticed that the front door is on the wrong side, as compared to the catalog illustration. What's strange is that the standard floor plan for the No. 111 also did not match the catalog illustration!

The floor plan shows that the front door should lead into the reception hall on the side of the house with the stairway (the house in Itasca matches this plan). The catalog illustration has the front door leading into the parlor on the side of the house opposite the stairway. Sloppy editing by someone at Sears. Scan courtesy of Sears Archives.

The original homeowners were Frank C. and Clara Schumacher. They were married in 1912 and, according to their son, Helmuth, they purchased the No. 111 in 1913. Although the house sits on a large lot today and looks like it might once have been a farmhouse, Frank was actually a bookkeeper. Arlington Heights Road was called Division Street at that time.

The architect of Modern Home No. 111 was Alfred L. Flegel (thanks to Sears House Seeker for that

Sears continued to grow throughout the early 1900’s. Nevertheless, in 1907, there was another downturn in the economy and Sears sales constricted for the first time (Bean, 2010). Sears wanted to expand operations in an effort to combat the economic depression, but Rosenwald and other business associates disagreed. According to Bean (2010) Sears felt like an outsider, so in 1908, he elected to resign as president and sold his share of the company for $10 million dollars. Even with the exit of Sears, the business thrived and continued unprecedented growth.…

The area of New York City’s historic Yorkville neighborhood lies within the now prestigious Upper East Side, extending from East 79th Street to East 96th Street and East End Avenue to Third Avenue (Figure 1.1). Presently bordered by 1st Avenue, East 81st Street, 2nd Avenue, and East 82nd Street, Block 1544 originally lied within the farmlands of Thomas Marston; in 1816, Marston’s heirs and executors conveyed this land to Joshua Jones and the northerly part of this property, present-day East 82nd Street, eventually passed to Isaac Jones, Jr. When Isaac passed away without a will, the land was conveyed to his widow, Mary Jones, and their three children; in 1856, they partitioned the property. On December 3, 1858, Mary de Trobriand, née…

When Jane Addams told her parents about it they thought it was a crazy idea cause she was 28 and they didn’t think she knew what she wanted yet. Its bad that she didn’t listen to her parents but if she would’ve she wouldn’t be known for who she is today. You’re probably wondering why did they choose Chicago the reason is that Ms. Starr was a teacher in Chicago so she had a broad idea of how the neighborhoods were there so they’d know where to look. They soon found a house on the 19th ward that was built 33 years prior to their finding of it. On September 18, 1889 it was finally done and they moved…

Located at 205 South 16th Street stands a house different from most. Its brick is layed in an orthodox pattern and its windows are long and narrow. The slender columns around the front porch suggest a Queen Ann style of house, but its curved roofing and widows walk make it more of a vernacular type of home. The house has multiple embellishments which also suggest that it could be a Queen Ann type of building because Queen Ann style homes have numerous amounts of detail and small, slender columns. For instance, this particular home has detailing on the crowning above the windows. Above the windows and front door is a structure that is painted yellow and has several details carved into it to make it look similar to the edge of lace. This draws attention to the…
