Dreams and their Deferring
As Steinbeck says “People who are most afraid of their dreams convince themselves they don’t dream at all”. A dream is a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep, a dream can also mean an aspiration; goal; or aim. Now many characters in Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” have many aspirations and dreams for the future but unfortunately for Curley’s wife, George, and Crook the had bad experiences which caused those dreams to be deferred or delayed. There are many things that could have caused these people’s dream to be deferred such as the many issues and obstacles we face in today’s society.
George has many dreams and aspirations for the future but unfortunately he has so many issues and obstacles in his life. George is a roving farm worker who is “small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features… [With] small, strong hands, slender arms, and a thin bony nose” (Steinbeck 2). At first you probably only see him as an intelligent man with a smart mouth, I can assure you there is more to him then meets the eye. Throughout his life someone has always been by his side, this person would be Lennie. Lennie as we learn later on in the book is George’s cousin. Lennie is not too bright. When Lennie was younger he was kicked by a horse in the head and he is mentally retarded. They have gone through a lot together. They shared a dream Johnson 2 of owning a farm and starting there own life together. George’s dream was to make Lennie happy and give him everything he could ever want in life. In the beginning of the book George and Lennie were running away from Weed, which was the place they used to live before getting a new job, because Lennie was touching a girls dress and she called out rape. They were on the run and hiding in the woods. Lennie wanted a can of beans and finally George snapped. “Whatever
