“Knowing Dumpster Diving” Lars Eighner’s Essay “On Dumpster Diving” describes the experience of being homeless and having to dumpster dive for a living. Eighner shows how dumpster diving is a full time job that requires a lot of effort but following certain rules can help someone to become more efficient however he discusses American waste as well as the true art of dumpster diving. The purpose of this essay is to explain the way of life as a scavenger and how to demonstrate how people are able to live by the minimal resources they can gain.

In this piece his tone is approving and proud of what he does to support himself and his dog Lizbeth. He describes Dumpster diving as “outdoor work, often surprisingly pleasant”. Eighner is very proud of this type of lifestyle that he lives and actually enjoys doing it. Eighner describes how it has shaped him as a person, dumpster diving is a part of him and he would not be the same without it in his life. He admits that Dumpster diving is often looked down upon as something that is dirty and frowned upon. Eighner, when talking about other first time divers, points out that “a new scavenger is filled with disgust and self-loathing”. However unlike those new scavengers, Eighner has grown to accept and love scavenging, just like many scavengers do after their first couple of experiences. Eighner did not choose this way of life, and many people who do have to dumpster dive for food did not choose to do it either. However just because dumpster diving was in a way thrust upon Eighner, and it is something that he cannot avoid, does not mean that he let it affect him negatively and it is a huge burden on his life. It is actually quite the opposite of that, it is something that he now enjoys doing and he is proud of it. Eighner’s purpose for writing this piece is to prove that just because somebody has a problem that might be considered a disadvantage to most people, does not mean that it actually has to be a negative thing in your life. Having to dumpster dive for food would usually be considered something that will affect you negatively, but Eighner appreciates it and embraces it. He goes to show that you can easily turn a negative situation into a positive one. Eighner deals with adversity just as well as anyone
