Theme Of The Viewer By Gary Crew
The illustrated text “The viewer” by Shaun Tan and Gary Crew tells the story of the curious protagonist, Tristan whose obsession with random artefacts lead him to discover a corrupt view master, in which depicts horrific events of our own history. The protagonist and responders are lead to make several discoveries in which force a re-evaluation of modern society and their attitude towards the world.
The theme of urban disintegration and wastefulness is explored throughout the text. The use of the simile “arched like a yellow moon about the warehouses and factories” emphasises the extent to which the dump that “Stretched over acres of drift sand” has grown. Thus this also emphasises the juxposition between the dump and the “warehouses and factories”. The contrast between the two highlights how more is produced whiles our waste continues to grow, in which suggests human wastefulness and allows the occurrence of a discovery. The waste, which symbolically represents modern society, is vividly depicted in the phrase “off-scour of a careless people”, thus suggesting urban disintegration. This allows responders to reflect on their discovery of the replicable and destructive nature of modern society and begin to re-evaluate their attitude in relation to the world.

The use of syntax through the isolation of the phrase “the first disc had changed” emphasises the haste and horror felt by the protagonist as he discovers the almost alien nature of the view master when the discs change to images of death and historical events of human collapse, depicted through illustrations. This confronting discovery made by the protagonist lead responders to furthermore reflect on the disasters in history and generate new

The audience gains a greater understanding and appreciation of the consequences and societal issues presented through the author’s texts of changing perspectives. This greater understanding is represented by a wide range of language techniques showing the quality of a change of perspective in life. In the short story ‘Forgotten Jelly’ by Megan Jacobson, it demonstrates how an individual understands the consequences and issues while time progresses, which in turn leads to a change of perspective. Likewise, in the poem ‘Mending Wall’ by Robert Frost, we observe how, as the characters develop, they understand and gradually learn more about the perspective of others and eventually leading to a change of their previous views.…

Today I will be talking about change within my novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding and my additional text, an artwork named ‘Star Mandala’. Star Mandala is used as a healing aid for victims of domestic violence, a cause of this is that many of the artists prefer to remain anonymous. In my visual, I represent the top part of the artwork to reflect many of the key themes of the novel Lord of the Flies.…

This image is juxtaposed with the freedoms of a farm far outside the city limits. The beautiful images and sounds within this advertisement not only makes a statement about the quality of the food that this company produces but also highlight the dangers of too much uniformity. The message of this two-minute video echoes the sentiments of Benjamin, who warns that “in even the most perfect reproductions, one thing is lacking: the here and now of the work of art – its unique existence in a particular place” (1053). As the scarecrow looks at the current state of the world that has allegedly been improved by technology, he realizes that the ability to generate more items has not improved the overall value of the items themselves. In fact, mass-production has reduced the once vibrant city to a cold and desolate place.…

    Wasteland Reaction Paper

The film Wasteland follows famous artist Vik Muniz as he visits Jardim Gramacho, a garbage dumpsite in his native country Brazil. There he starts a fundraising project of photographing some of the chosen “pickers” and creating enlargements of the photos made of recyclable materials, he then sells the creations and gives the proceeds to the group. Watching as the project materializes was very inspiring. Most of workers or “catadores” lived a hard life but in their own personal tragedies they never let it stop them from working hard to get where they want to be in life. For even though they admitted picking out recyclable materials, was disgusting they were still so proud of their work and I believe they had a very good reason to be. Their job no matter how unsanitary is very dignified. One of the oldest pickers even said that it was okay to get his hands dirty since when he receives his salary, he knows he got it from dignity. This is a very inspirational statement given the present state of the world wherein human trafficking, prostitution, kidnapping, drug dealing and the like are being used to earn profit. Aside from the high personal integrity brought about by their job they are also immensely helping the environment. I strongly believe there are riches in garbage. I not only give kudos to the pickers but also to Vik Muniz for in his success as an artist he did not fail to look back from where he came from. He did a lot to help the people in Jardim Gramacho rise up from their financial situations. One of the things he said in the film which really got to me was “ I’d rather be the one to have nothing and want everything than to have everything and want nothing.” This depicts how the real sense of fulfillment of a person has nothing to do with gaining worldly…

It seeks to argue that even though cities are seen to be the modern part of humanity, little is done to help the society understand that a lot has been sacrificed in order to give that name. the city that comes with danger is the city that is embraced in the 21st century.…

It is common for people to throw away belongings that were once important to them. This is because our society has a tendency to be wasteful. In the essays “The Town Dump” by Wallace Stegner, “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner, and “The Town Dump” by Howard Nemerov, the authors all display their opinions when it comes to the topic of value, and items that have been thrown away. Through the use of imagery, the three authors depict their attitudes towards the idea that one man’s trash may or may not be another man’s treasure. Therefore showing that every object can have a value to a person that others see as invaluable.…

    Dumpster Diving

Lars Eighner is an experienced dumpster diver or as he prefers to call it “scavenging.” He writes “On Dumpster Diving” an essay about the three years he spent on the streets accompanied by his lone companion, dog Lizabeth. Born in Texas in 1948, Eighner began dumpster diving one year before he ended up homeless after being unable to pay for his rent. Diving through dumpsters to obtain life’s main necessities, Eighner becomes a veteran at realizing what foods are safe and what items can be useful if kept. One of the most important aspects of trying to persuade readers is to use the appropriate tone according to the situation. The calm tone that Eighner uses doesn’t strengthen his argument, but with his knowledge of dumpster diving, he ultimately persuade readers that people living in modernized parts of the world have wasteful habits. By reading the essay, I am convinced of his argument about wasteful people being very common.…

Rubbish and 'waste is a function of what we do as individuals' (‘Rubbish society’, 2009, track 1) and is inevitably linked with mass consumption. Society and individuals devalue rubbish because 'rubbish has no value to whoever throws it away' (Brown, 2009, p118). The effects of busier lifestyles has lead to a more labour saving society, 'people’s time and labour become more highly valued,' (Brown, 2009, p112). This shift has lead to an increase of…

Heather Rogers argues in “The Conquest of Garbage” (Kirszner LG, Mandell SR eds. The Blair Reader, 7th ed. 2011) that although waste and garbage have many negative effects on the environment, it is still good for business. Of the many monuments of civilization, the Fresh Kills Landfill is one of them; it is the largest landfill. The United States is the world’s biggest producer of garbage. It is now harder to avoid producing waste and garbage. There are questions about garbage and where it goes that remain unanswered such as: will we run out of places to put garbage? An abundance of garbage means an abundance of decay and filth, and yet waste is a necessary part of the consumer society. Foe every ton of household waste, there are seventy tons of industrial waste. Not only does garbage have a negative effect on the environment, but the way we deal with garbage also has a negative effect on the environment. Since the national set of standards was implemented ten years ago, there are garbage graveyards now that are struggling to meet new standards. There are also landfill gases in addition to landfill liquid waste. Waste incinerators were responsible for producing sixty-nine percent of the worldwide dioxin emissions. Thirty percent of municipal waste is packaging; forty percent is from plastics, though we know that plastics stay intact for centuries. The output of throwaways is still enormous after the introduction of recycling. Most recyclables still end up as garbage. Our consumption of raw materials and our production of waste speed up the destruction of the earth’s natural systems. Global warming is occurring faster than predicted because of the increase in burning fossil fuels. Extreme weather has already occurred as an effect of emissions. Both developed and undeveloped countries have an effect on the environment. Second and third world countries are turning to the use of plastics such as the plastic shopping bags causing an increase in the…
