On the Waterfront by Elia Kazan: Analysis
“On the Waterfront”

Description Elia Kazan directed “On the waterfront” which is a drama/crime filled movie that begins with a man named Terry Malloy, played by Marlon Brando who works on the docks but is confronted with being unsuccessful in life. He used to be a popular boxing back in his “glory” years but now he has to settle with his low intelligence and non purpose in life. He spends most of his time on the docks running errands for the corrupt mob boss of the dockers union, Johnny friendly (Lee J. Cobb). Johnny is a big part of Terry's life since he took him under his wing as a young boy and his big brother, Charlie (Rod Steiger)is Johnny’s right hand man. Terry witnesses a murder by two of Johnny's thugs, and later meets the dead man's sister and feels responsible for his death. The sister, (Edie) Eva Marie Saint introduces him to Father Barry, who tries to force him to provide information for the courts that will smash the dock racketeers. The stars include; Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, and Eva Marie. Saint.

Analysis From the beginning on the film, my first impression was that Terry's issue was with the mob and his brother was the one person on by his side but its the compete opposite. His brother sold him out, he told him to throw the championship fight. So it turns out his brother was the one holding him back the entire time and he finally realized hes not the brother he thought he was. The only way for him to break the obstacles that faced him was falling in love with Edie and standing up for himself at the Docks against Johnny Friendly. Comparing this film to other drama/crime films is difficult in a sense that it had the right amount of drama and suspenseful moments. Ill be comparing this film to another film called, “39 steps” a dramatic movie made is 1935. It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starred Richard Hannay, played by Robert Donat and Pamela, played by Madeleine Carroll. “On the Waterfront” was more

On the Waterfront details the story of a reluctant hero, Terry Malloy, as he grapples with his conscience and ultimately attains redemption through an act of unbridled resistance against the corrupt waterfront union. As Terry comes to terms with his burgeoning ethical imperatives, the influences of others, especially that of Edie and Father Barry are of paramount importance. However, it is Edie Doyle, who through her unrelenting quest to discover “who is responsible for Joey”, provides the moral backbone for Terry, an inarticulate lowly longshoreman who once believed that his philosophy of life was to “do it to them before they do it to you”. Through Edie’s love and moral guidance, Terry is able to transform into a person who acts with moral conviction, able to overthrow the union mob and garner the respect of the other longshoremen.…

In thinking of film's that are able to exemplify many film elements that are put together in an interesting and organized manner the movie Rumble Fish comes to mind. The director Francis Ford Coppola demonstrates how metaphors are able to help decipher a deeper meaning of the film. Rumble Fish is a film that is about growing up and seeing new things that have never been seen before. The two main characters who are brothers Rusty James and the Motorcycle Boy, experience internal conflicts. Rusty James the younger of the two looks up to his brother and wants to be like him. However the elder has grown out of his previous demeanor of always fighting and he doesn't want his brother to follow in his steps. Throughout the film he ask Rusty James why he is following him. The Motorcycle Boy knows that his brother is somewhat trapped in the city and someone needs to get him out or set him free. He looks to the fish in the pet store to explain this and it is how he relates to his brothers problems. This is the scene that will be examined of when Rusty James is in the pet store with his brother and they are looking at the fish. It has been explained how much everyone in town looks up to the Motorcycle Boy, and on numerous occasions Rusty James said he was going to look like him when he was older. Even though the Motorcycle Boy never shows much affection, he wants something better for his brother, and even though he never tells his brother to leave until the end when he knows he is going to die, he tries to let him know through the fish. So until this point in the movie the viewer never really knows how the Motorcycle Boy feels about his brother.…

The characterisation in this movie is very effective for Quint and Hooper. Quint is a drunken fisherman and is a bit of a show off. We first see this when we see him in the hall scraping the chalk board to get the people to listen to him about the shark. In the scene he complains about the pay of the killing of the shark and says he will only do it for $10,000. Hooper is a marine biologist who has been studying sharks since he was attacked on his boat. Brody and Hooper go out on hoppers boat and look for the shark but instead they find a little boat drifting in the water Hooper goes out into to the sea in a scuba diving suit and goes under the little boat and finds a tooth of a great White shark Hooper grabs the tooth but he gets a scare when he sees a body pop out of a hole of the boat Hooper screams and drops the tooth of the shark he swims back to his boat to broody. He comes to help chief Brody and Quint catch and kill the shark. The chief and Hooper go on to Quint’s boat and go out to sea to kill the shark. Hooper goes into a metal cage and gets lowered in to the water but to his surprise he gets attacked by the shark. Close up shot was used on the shark luckily he escapes unharmed as he hides behind some rocks. The ship (the Orca) gets destroyed and the chief is still on the boat, he grabs a rifle to blow up the tank in its mouth. Written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Oliver Stone this movie is a true masterpiece. Some of the points Oliver Stone is making throughout the movie are their lack of family support and how the aspects of physical and mental abuse become a powerful role in changing the way some people think. Another leading point I believe he is trying to make is how society and the media make them out to be superstars or celebrities. It stars Woody Harrelson as Mickey and Juliette Lewis as Mallory and includes other greats such as Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr. It dares to ask some serious questions such as (Do we laugh at spousal abuse or child molestation or even incest)?…

This Film is n Zoot Suit, was produced by Luis Valdez. The film is in a theatrical style and is based on a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial. This event took place when a group of young Mexican-Americans were wrongfully charged with murder. In the play, Henry Reyna is played by Luis Valdez’ brother, Daniel Valdez and he does a great job creating parallels to the inspired role of Hank Leyvas. Reyna is a pachuco, who was unfairly prosecuted, and then thrown in jail along with his gang for a murder they did not commit. The play is set in the barrios of Los Angeles in the early 1940s against the backdrop of the Zoot Suit Riots and World War II. As in the play, Edward James Olmos portrays El Pachuco, an idealized Zoot Suiter, who functions as narrator throughout the story and serves as Henry's conscience. The film is very effective in showing when Henry jumps in and out of his mind. Over all the film as a main message that is that there are many pachucos at the time but not all have to end up in jail or dead (like the real situation with Hank Leyvas). This is shown at the end as we see that Henry’s brother joins the military and does well for himself. The reason that this film was such a great success in my eyes is that it was in a form of a play and that the audience was actually brought in and somewhat engaged. I felt as the narrator spoke to me. And in a sense the narrator spoke to the idea that there are many outcomes to a single event or happening. He spoke to the idea that if one reflects on certain turning points in their lives, if they would to do something different, life would have been different overall.…

A key character that ensures we enjoy the film throughout is captin jack sparrow. The first time we meet jack he is portrayed as a powerful figure standing tall on top of his ship. As the scene progresses we see that he is drunk and unorganised sailing on his own on a sinking boat. The director shows us this by using a wide array of camera shots and other techniques. When we first see jack he is standing on top of his ship. Although he is standing tall and proud his clothes are weather beaten and he has clearly been at sea for a long time. The low angle camera shots that the director uses help the impression that he is powerful and strong. The director also uses an over the shoulder shot to help connect the audience to jack. The director then thatters this illusion by panning down the mast to reveal that he is on a small boat, that is quickly taking on water ,all on his own. The director does this to make jack an instantly likeable character and to make us want to fing out more about him.…

The Old Man and the Sea is basically a story of a battle between an old, experienced fisherman, Santiago, and a large marlin. He is so unlucky that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with him and been told to fish insteadwith successful fishermen. The boy visits Santiago's shack each night, hauling his fishing gear, preparing food, talking about American baseball and his favorite player Joe DiMaggio. Santiago tells Manolin that on the next day, he will go far out into the Gulf Stream, north of Cuba in the Straits of Florida to fish, confident that his unlucky streak is near its end..On the eighty-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago does as promised, sailing his skiff far beyond the island’s shallow coastal waters and venturing into the Gulf Stream. He prepares his lines and drops them in the water. At noon, a big fish, which he knows is a marlin, takes the bait that Santiago has placed one hundred fathoms deep in the waters. The old man expertly hooks the fish, but he cannot pull it in. Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat. Two days and nights pass with Santiago holding the line.Although he is wounded by the struggle and in pain, Santiago expresses a compassionate appreciation for his enemy, often referring to him as a brother. He also determines that because of the fish's great dignity, no one shall eat the marlin. On the third day, the fish begins to circle the skiff. The fish pulls the boat all through the day, through the night, through another day, and through another night. Santiago is worn out and almost delirious, but he uses all the strength to pull the fish onto its side and stab the marlin with a harpoon. Santiago straps the marlin to the side of his skiff and heads home, thinking about the high price the fish will bring him at the market and how many people he will feed. On his return home, some sharks are attracted to the marlin's blood that had trailed off in the water. Santiago kills a great mako shark…

OLD MAN AND THE SEA Summary Ernest Hemingway writes about an old fisherman and a young boy setting out to catch a big fish in The Old Man and the Sea. The old man, Santiago, has been fishing in the Gulf Stream with a young boy named Manolin. Manolin began fishing with Santiago when he was about 5 years old and feels that Santiago is a second father to him. He taught Manolin everything he knows about fishing and Manolin is very loyal to this old man. Santiago has been on an 84 day fishing slump and after 40 days, Manolin’s parents order him to go fish on a different boat which caught three fish in a week. Manolin takes Santiago out for a drink on their way home and begin reminiscing about their early experiences fishing together. The young boy suggests that since he cannot fish with Santiago anymore, that he would like to help in some way, by possibly going out and getting sardines for him. Santiago then goes on talking about baseball and mentions Joe DiMaggio who was a great player for the Yankees in his time. The boy goes out to get the sardines and when he comes back the old man is asleep, so he wakes him up and they continue their conversation. Manolin leaves after the eat and talk, and the old man goes back to sleep. Santiago dreams of the days when he was fishing in Africa and all the things he has seen. He awakes and goes to get the boy from his shack and they set out. The old man and young boy determine to catch a big fish and are very confident. Santiago thought of the sea as la mar which is what people call her when they love her.” (Hemingway 29) The younger fisherman talked of la mar as el mar because they saw her as an enemy, not their love. The old man sees la mar as femimine and something that gave out…

This novel centers upon Santiago, an aging fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream.
