Theme of Madness #1 1. McMurphy is just a schemer who rebels against authority. Throughout the story, McMurphy is constantly breaking the rules and rebelling against authority. For example, he is not allowed to sneak people into the ward nut he does it anyway. McMurphy is just a free spirited person who does not care about authority. 2. In the book, I think Chief and George are the characters with mental illnesses. Chief has schizophrenia. George definitely has germ phobia. My definition of a mental illness is a person with an abnormal body dysfunction. 3. Sometimes when I see a person that looks a little different I might say “Their probably a little mentally challenged”. Now, since reading the book I am careful what I say because some people are just different, and being different does not make someone have a mental illness. 4. Society views mental illness in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest with shame. Immediately when people saw the patient’s uniforms they were treated badly. The medical establishment views mental illness as people that need to be fixed. There are no conflicting viewpoints.
CHEW ON THIS 1. I agree Chief is one of the sanest people in the book. He usually knows what is going on. It was a genius idea for him to keep acting dumb so others underestimate him. 2. I disagree. The Nurse just loves to keep her patients in order. She is very strict and a mental hospital should not be wild.

Theme of Manipulation #3 1. McMurphy is the biggest manipulator in the novel. HE manipulates other characters by tricking them into gambling. McMurphy bets he could get someone strong enough to lift the control panel when he already knows Chief can lift it. 2. Manipulation in the novel is always a bad thing because some men in the novel cannot think right and it is just wrong to take advantage of them. 3. McMurphy is not easily manipulated. He recognizes it and
