The struggles of Santosh in adjusting to a new country V.S Naipaul's story " One Out of Many", consists of different characters and struggles. The story talks about an Indian cook called "Santosh", who migrates from Bombay to Washington D.C with his employer. The writer presents in the story the struggles of Santosh in adaptation to a new country that has different traditions and cultures. The story reveals how an Indian immigrant from a poor society suffering in his new environment and how he was able to adapt and control his suffering . One of these struggles that the writer presents is cultural identity. Santosh lose his, self- confidence, self-awareness, and struggles between a pursuit of freedom and a sense of belonging. When he looks in the mirror, he says: " In the fluorescent light it was the color of the corpse. My eyes were strained; the sharp air hurt my nose and seemed to get into my brain." In addition to Washington (They were all dressed as though they were going to the wedding), but in Bombay, they wear very simple clothes. Another contrast, in Bombay they do not care for woman who like hubshi, and they cannot marry the women's like hubshi but in America, Santosh accepts to marry a hubshi woman in order to become a free American citizen. This difference of both cultures makes Santosh embarrassed to which cultural identity he maintains. Santosh feels as a person without any identity, respect, security, and self-awareness. He feels as a strange person in a world full of differences and strangers, hence he decides to marry a woman in order to become a free American citizen.
