Scottish novelist Nairne Campbell is the author of two books “One Stare Up” and “Stony Ground”.
The text “One Stare Up” is about a regular working-class family who came to the cinema to watch the film. Andrew wanted to watch the comedy film but Rosa showed no interest and wanted only to show off in that place. Concerning the theme of the text, it is Different life values. At the beginning of the text the author describes the cinema. But from the very beginning we can understand that it was the perception of heroes. The tone of describing the cinema is elevated. To show us the real picture of the cinema the author uses such epithets as short marble staircase, rich carpet, soft. Moreover we can notice here a simile material that yielded like springing turf. So we see that our heroes enjoy to be in such a place. To describe the atmosphere the author uses such metaphor as voice and sing again into voluptuous stillness. The author tries to combine simple word with literary one to show the realistic picture of the situation. We notice such epithets as trim, chocolate, blue, silently which the author uses to describe a service girl. At the same time we see such literary words as emerged, glanced, admitted. So this girl showed the way to our characters. And they appeared in the film room. Here we see a remark from the film: “ Gee baby you’re a swell kid” to show the contrast between the atmosphere in the cinema and the context of the film. Then we see some actions of the spectators. The author conveys their actions with help of colloquial words such as hoop, picked out a couple of, stood back to let. All this words are use here to show the contrast between the picture of cinema and a real life. To show that Rosa was a common person the author use here a colloquial speech also: “This a comedy”.
