This paper provides a brief history of the company caterpillar as well as an perspective on several key points of their operations.
Caterpillar Page 3 of 8 Caterpillar is the world 's #1 maker of earthmoving machinery and a leading supplier of agricultural equipment. The company builds construction, mining, and logging machinery; diesel and natural gas engines; industrial gas turbines; and electrical power-generation systems. Caterpillar has plants worldwide and sells its equipment globally via a network of 3,500 locations in 180 countries. Caterpillar offers rental services through more than 1,600 outlets worldwide, provides financing and insurance for its dealers and customers. Cat also invests in power projects that use Caterpillar power generation equipment. Caterpillar Logistics Services offers supply chain solutions.
Thought of by Benjamin Holt experimenting with various forms of steam tractors for use in agriculture he pioneered his first steam track-type tractor in 1904 and later in 1906 a gas tractor. In 1925 Holt Manufacturing Company merged with Best Tractor Co. to form Caterpillar.
After the companies merged, Caterpillar went through many changes, including the adoption of the diesel engine. Caterpillar products found fame with the US Navy "Seabees" who built airfields in the Pacific War. Following World War II, the company grew at a rapid pace and launched its first venture outside the US in 1950, marking the beginning of Caterpillar 's development into a multinational corporation.
