Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her mother was eighteen years old, single, and not ready to be a parent. Once Oprah was four years old, her mother moved to Milwaukee and left Oprah with her grandmother. They were extremely poor and lived on a farm, but Oprah was a highly intelligent child and did well in school. Her grandmother taught her to read when she was three and from then on she memorized Bible passages which she recited in church. This shaped her public speaking abilities which helped her in the future as a news anchor and tv talk show host.
