1
In this booklet I will be explaining what the main components and functions are of the cells.
I will also be outlining the structure of the main tissues in the body and the gross structure of all the body systems.
2
The components and functions of cells.
Cell membrane
All organisms have something in common, they all have a cell membrane. The cell membrane is a barrier that separates a cell from it surrounding environment. Its function is to hold everything together and stops unwanted substances coming in and out.
Nucleus
The nucleus is found in the eukaryotic cell. It controls the activity cell, the nucleus is therefore the cells control centre. it’s a mix of
DNA molecules and large proteins.
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is material in a cell, such as mitochondria. Cytoplasm is full of proteins, which are essential to your body. Cytoplasm is also called protoplasm. To see cytoplasm, you'll need a microscope. Mitochondria
Mitochondria are known as the powerful ones of all the cell. They act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, it then
Endoplasmic Reticulum.
The endoplasmic reticulum is connected to the outer of the two nuclear membranes and consists of a series of interconnected membranes. The endoplasmic reticulum acts as a manufacturing and packaging system.
It also possesses and packages lipid and proteins
Important in the production of Lysosomes
Golgi apparatus.
Golgi apparatus work together with the endoplasmic reticulum. the endoplasmic reticulum products are chemically modified and sorted into those that are secreted such as hormones and digestive enzymes.
They also possess and package lipid and proteins just like endoplasmic reticluim. Golgi apparatus are important in the production of Lysosomes
Lysosome.
Lymosomes are membrane vessels that break down digestive enzymes. They also break down unwanted structures like old mitrochondria. I
