My goal in this functional area is to keep children safe at all times by supervising them constantly and establishing class rules that will help children stay safe. The class rules related to this functional area will be walk in the classroom, keep your hands to yourself, and stay in the classroom at all times. I will teach children why these class rules are so important as well. In addition to these rules I will teach my students basic safety measures like stranger danger, only cross the road with an adult, and only leave the classroom with an adult. Ensuring the child’s welfare and safety is important we make sure they are safe by carrying out risk assessments and stopping children swinging on their chairs and running with scissors. We do this because if a child falls when they have the scissors they could be badly injured aswell as the swinging on chairs or someone else could get hurt. Using physical punishment is wrong because the child will grow up thinking violence is acceptable and use it themselves. Instead of physical punishment use strategies such as time out because there are plenty of ways to teach children what is wrong and right. Showing compassion is important the child needs to feel that they can come to you with a problem and if you are not sensitive and compassionate they will not feel like they can confide in you. This is important because when a child is upset they need someone to come and talk to and they will go to the person who is compassionate. Respecting a child’s confidentiality is important because they have a right to it. If a child comes to you with a small issue then you can talk them through it but if it is a major issue for example bullying or abuse then tell the child’s teacher. It is very important to give children the opportunity to put forward their ideas and provide children with opportunities to express themselves in their own time and using their own words, children should be given plenty of thinking time. The children should always have your full attention when listening to them; this can be achieved through body language, facial expression, speech and gesture. Listening to children is key to establishing a positive relationship; it is essential that teachers listen to children and then respond appropriately, these skills can be modelled to children through speaking and listening. A good starting point would be to talk to the child about what they enjoy, hobbies, schooling, family and friends etc. Show them that you are interested in what they have to say. It is also good to communicate boundaries and make children aware that breaking rules will result in consequences, if this is explained in the right way then a fair punishment can be decided and fairness will result in respect from each part.…

It is important to maintain a safe environment for students inside and outside of the classroom. My goal is to make sure that the children understand what being safe is. I make sure that they know how to play safe. All of the toys and the materials that the children use are safe. I make sure that there are no broken toys that may harm them around. The children along with me create the class rules. I make sure that the outlet plugs are in place and that the cabinets are secure. The children follow the classroom rules. I make sure that I supervise the children at all times. I also make sure that I observe the areas where they play, work, and eat. I make sure that shoes are tied. I make sure that the children use walking feet when we walk down the halls and in the classroom. When we transition to go outside we have to cross over an area where the cars drive. We make sure that we stop, look, and listen for cars and put out caution cones before we go to the playground. I also check the playground for sticks, trash, glass or any other items that can cause harm. I am also CPR certified so I know the procedure to help a child or adult in need. We have emergency plans displayed in the classroom. The children are aware of what to do in the case of emergency such as a fire.
