Introduction:
Everyone holds themselves to some sort of standard. Spoken or unspoken, written or unwritten, they have guidelines for everyday choices and decisions. These guidelines are sometimes called morals, values, or ethics. In a professional situation these guidelines are vital to ones success. They provide accountability and checks and balances for ones professional life. As a teacher one should keep themselves to a higher standard. Teachers are responsible for shaping the lives of the future. This is a large task, and requires a strong commitment to excellence. Teachers must not show favoritism to one student over another. They must treat each student equally not matter what their background, ethnicity, creed, religion, or other difference. They must handle discipline issues in the fairest way possible. The punishment should fit the crime. Teachers must teach respect as well as show it. Each child should be respected in their beliefs, rights, and decisions. No student is exactly like the next so teachers should not expect the same things from each student while still remaining fair. Teachers should also expect respect. Students should respect their teachers in every way and teachers should carry themselves in a manner that demands it. All of these attributes and many more can all be wrapped up in the word professionalism. Punctuality, attendance, loyalty, and many more traits fall under professionalism. This one word can sum up everything that a teacher should be. There is a balancing act that has to take place in this area of a teacher’s profession. A classroom should be a place of learning while engaging the students through fun activities. Teachers should reach out to other teachers for help with their students, while not revealing any information that would violate that student’s privacy. It is a thin line to
