Orville Wright/Narrative
Hook:
Ever been on a plane well if you have thank me because I invented the first plane with my brother Wilbur and that was modified through the years to the planes we have now.

Background info (birthplace, birthdate, any relevant childhood info., relevant relationship info., etc.):

I was born on August 19, 1871, in Dayton, Ohio I was one of five children of my mother Susan Catherine Koerner, and my father Milton Wright, a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. As a boy, I was very curious, and my family encouraged the development. In 1889 my mother, Susan Catherine Koerner Wright died. With my mother gone, my sister Katharine took on the responsibilities of most of the chores except for wilbur and I did,

We observed that birds angled their wings to balance and control their bodies during flight. Utilizing their concept of "wing warping" and the movable rudder, we developed a design that had eluded all who came before them. On December 17, 1903, we succeeded in making the first free, controlled flight of a power-driven airplane. Of four flights we made that day, the longest was 59 seconds, over a distance of of 852 feet. Today, we Orville and Wilbur Wright are considered the "fathers of modern aviation."

The news of my triumph got to Washington D.C and we made a couple more but most failed and the government was not so keen on giving us more money for experiments they wanted results! When Wilbur set sail to Europe I stayed in Washington and taught and demonstrated my plane, hoping to get more government contracts. In July 1909 I finish "demonstrating" and got a contract with the government and I was going to start, when the wanted to have a passenger on the plane. Not a hard challenge but I did it. So on May 25, 1910 Wilbur and I took our flight and flew for six minutes. After that I also took out my father.

Though they invented the airplane, many prototypes of the airplane already existed, but none of them were controllable. The Wright Brothers’ love for airplanes started when they were little. They had recieved a rubber band powered helicopter, which was of course, uncontrollable. From there, they didn’t do much more regarding airplanes until later. The first job that the Wright Brothers had had no correlation to making airplanes, as they both worked in a print shop. As a hobby they started to fix, and create bikes out of spare parts, this hobby eventually evolved into a job for the brothers. Their time in fixing bikes resparked their love for inventing, bringing airplanes back into the picture. Creating the bikes also gave the bros experience with creating transportation…

On December 17, 1903 crewmen John Daniels, Will Dough, Adam Etheridge, W.C. Binkley, and Johnny Moore, a teenager from Nags Head, would witness an event that would change the world forever. The Wright Brothers would make history in achieving the first sustained air flight. While this flight lasted only 12 seconds, it was nevertheless the first in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air, had flown forward without reducing speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it…

The death of the German glider Otto Lilienthal is what made Wilbur become interested in flight. He studied the flight of birds and how they carried themselves in the air even more. The brothers were determined to make this experiment work. Once they set their mind on doing something, nothing or no one could stop them from proceeding until the job were finished. For everything to be successful they had to go to a place that had a wind strong enough for the glider to stay in the air. This is what led them to Kitty Hawk, which is known for the most powerful…

Can we fly? This question has been asked for centuries by hundreds of inventors and philosophers alike; some of who are discussed in the National Geographic article I read titled: If We Only Had Wings. The author of this article, Nancy Shute, writes about the trials, ideas, and achievements of inventors such as Leonardo da Vinci and the Wright brothers. However, the article is even more interesting because while describing the progression of personal aircrafts throughout history, she also depicts her flying experience while hang gliding. This article was very informative as well, with information ranging from the steps of flying a hang glider, to the science behind how humming birds are able to defy gravity. Overall I loved this article; it was short but filled with information and pictures that are able to tell stories.…

Men screeched as a storm of missiles rained through the sky. I had seen this all before. Too many times for me to remember, it really wasn’t my job to remember. Humans never learned. They were proud, foolish, volatile creatures. And at what price? I would never understand the things people valued over life. They had far more to lose than they ever had to gain. The outcome is always the same of course, no one has ever won war and no one ever will. Well, except for me.…
