I was born on August 19, 1871, in Dayton, Ohio I was one of five children of my mother Susan Catherine Koerner, and my father Milton Wright, a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. We observed that birds angled their wings to balance and control their bodies during flight. Utilizing their concept of "wing warping" and the movable rudder, we developed a design that had eluded all who came before them. On December 17, 1903, we succeeded in making the first free, controlled flight of a power-driven airplane. Of four flights we made that day, the longest was 59 seconds, over a distance of of 852 feet. Today, we Orville and Wilbur Wright are considered the "fathers of modern aviation."
The news of my triumph got to Washington D.C and we made a couple more but most failed and the government was not so keen on giving us more money for experiments they wanted results! When Wilbur set sail to Europe I stayed in Washington and taught and demonstrated my plane, hoping to get more government contracts. In July 1909 I finish "demonstrating" and got a contract with the government and I was going to start, when the wanted to have a passenger on the plane. Not a hard challenge but I did it. So on May 25, 1910 Wilbur and I took our flight and flew for six minutes. After that I also took out my father.
