In order to ensure a conviction against Bernardo, the prosecution arranged a plea bargain whereby Homolka would testify against her husband, in return for a lesser sentence (12 years) for her. If the prosecution had been in possession of the tapes, they would not have needed Homolka’s testimony, and she would have received a much longer prison sentence. Because the prosecution was not in possession of the tapes, the justice received by the families of the victims of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka was greatly diminished. Homolka, a murderer, received a lesser punishment in contrast to her husband, Paul Bernardo, simply due to her deal. Homolka drugged and killed her own sister, and actively participated in the sexual assaults and murders of other young women. By Homolka accepting a plea bargain, neither her own family nor the families of her victims received the justice they deserved and…

On the night of February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, United States, George Zimmerman fatally shot Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African American high school student. On April 11, 2012, George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. It was until Florida State Attorney Angela Corey announced the charges against Zimmerman that he decided to turn himself in to law enforcement. On July 13, 2013, the six-person jury rendered a not guilty verdict on all counts. 17 year old Trayvon Martin was a victim of an obvious hate crime that was caused by many prejudiced views towards the black community. George Zimmerman was not an African American male, therefore he was less likely to go to jail. Situations such as this one often remained unresolved due to the laws in the U.S. and how they affect African American males. Historical trends in justice administration have shown that the criminal justice system is not broken, it was designed that way. The criminal justice system was created in a way that will disadvantage, subdue, and control certain minority…

Romano found his newly-wedded daughter dismembered, abused, routed, and lifeless after she didn't answer his calls. Romano speculates that one day people will claim that the life without parole sentence is too severe, and a bill will pass that permits killers to get out of prison without parole. Romano strongly believes that the death penalty is justice for murderers. The death penalty reduces crime, wakes up society, and helps victims' families. The death penalty should be used to punished violent criminals.…

The young African American teenager was visiting his father and went out to the gas station to buy food, while on his way back, he felt like he was being watched and followed. After he decided to run, Trayvon was "confronted, shot, and killed near [the home he was residing in]." Gunman, George Zimmerman, frequently notified the police on many accounts. He supposedly noticed someone "suspicious" in his neighborhood, and Trayvon Martin happened to be that suspicious individual. His murder was evidently a hate crime, due to all the police reports that state that a majority of the suspected individuals Zimmerman spotted were black males. This case acted as a stimulus for people to reunite and attempt to make some change. Many people began losing trust in the system and acknowledging the…

The shooter, George Zimmerman, still has not faced any serious consequence for the murder. Many people in the Sanford community, and even around the country, believe that there is no question that Zimmerman should be convicted and sent to jail, but, unfortunately, it is not up to the people; it is up to the justice system. With the consideration of Florida’s state laws, this is a difficult case to foresee the outcome of George Zimmerman’s conviction and prosecution.…

The headlines of the two articles play a crucial role to indicate the writers’ tone and thoughts on Pistorius and the “mysterious tragedy”. The headline “Pistorius as mysterious as the shooting tragedy” provides the reader with a simile comparing the runner and the “tragedy”, the Gerald Imray specifically does not use the words “death” or “murder” when discussing this issue. In addition, the word “tragedy” underscores that the murder was accidental and not intentional. “Oscar Pistorius case: The Blonde is the victim here, Blade” is the title of the article by Allison Pearson from The Telegraph, the plosive diction in the headline may indicate the sound of a gun, the gun that Pistorius used to kill Reeva Steenkamp.
