average childhood, but his life started to become occupied as a young adult. He was born on April 28, 1908 in Zwittau, Czechoslovakia. He grew up with his sister, Elfriede, in a rich family. His father owned a farm-equipment manufacturing factory, and his mother was a homemaker. Both siblings went to a German-language school where Oskar was not an exceptional student. Later, he decided to go to trade school instead of going to college. This is where he learned skills to make deals and contracts that helped him in his later expedition of saving Jews. In 1924, Oskar left trade school and started looking for weird jobs to find his interest. Schindler met and married Emilie Pelz in 1928, but he left soon after to join the military. After military service, Oskar Schindler worked for his father’s company until it collapsed during the Great Depression.
Oskar Schindler started to ascend in success at the beginning of his adult life. When Hitler came into power, Schindler joined a pro-Nazi organization where he was used as a spy. He was arrested many times because of this, but he was released because of his close colleagues in the Nazi party. Schindler was once sentenced to death, but he was discharged when the Germans conquered Sudetenland. When World War II started, Oskar left his wife to travel to Krakow; he hoped to make money off of the black market. When Oskar wanted to expand his business of illegal products, he obtained an old Jewish enamelware factory to sell goods to the German military. Schindler made contracts and deals with the German and Jewish parties for business. Schindler’s business boomed from 45 workers to 1,700 workers in 1944. He hired Jewish workers because they were cheap, but when Jews were being arrested, Oskar realized he needed to hire them to save their lives. This is when Oskar began his venture of saving Jews.
Oskar Schindler protected over 1,200 Jews through his intelligence, strategies and generosity.
Schindler is mainly known for saving Jews by employing them in his factory; however, he used many more strategies to do so. Schindler would make the Nazi officers who would inspect his factory drunk, so they would not see all of Schindler’s workers fumbling while they work. He also made a list, “Schindler’s List”, of people he would buy from concentration camps to work at his factory. This list included his former workers as well as a number of others. When Schindler and Emilie brought new workers into the factory, they nursed them until they were healthy again. Schindler maintained a special relationship with his workers, so they were called “Schindlerjuden” (Schindler Jews). By the end of the war, Schindler was penniless; he had spent all of his money to protect his workers. All of these contributions that Oskar Schindler made has a great effect on American history. Schindler not only saved people’s lives, but he also showed people to use what you have for the benefit of others. Many people look up to Schindler for his sacrifices and his contribution to the end of World War II and the freedom of hundreds of Jewish
prisoners.
Oskar Schindler was an outstanding liberator of over 1,200 Jews during World War II. He used many tactics in order to save these lives, and all of them were successful. He used his cleverness, generosity and alliances to outwit many Nazi officials in order to obtain current prisoners. His main tactic was to employ all of his refugees in his factory, so the Nazi officers could not access them. Oskar Schindler is an extraordinary entrepreneur that saved countless lives during the Holocaust.
