Oliver Parker uses a range of elements in Othello to convey a sexual view on Othello, Iago and Desdemona’s relationship in the very important armoury scene. Parker uses the positioning of characters and camera angles to show the emotions and insights of what the characters are feeling. The actor’s use of facial expressions and body language also show how the characters feel towards each other. In some cases the body language speaks more then what is being said. Kenneth Brown plays Iago very well by using his facial expressions and body language to help act his part. Parker uses this technique effectivly several times in this scene. We see a close up of Othello with half of his face being light and half dark. This represents the ‘two sides’ in Othello being from a Moorish background. Parker does this to show that Iago is bringing out some of Othello’s ‘savageness’ that is still with him from his past. However Othello states that he is not jealous and Parker reveals this by bringing out his ‘light’ side to show how he still has his other ‘good’ side.
Parker’s use of techniques such as the camera angles, facial expressions and lighting allows him to express the armoury scene in a influential way. The techniques assist in showing the tension that builds between Othello and Iago. The techniques also show Iago’s dishonesty and Othello’s jealosy. The elements Parker has used are perfect for this scene as it is one of the most important scenes in the whole
