OtheESSAY QUESTION
“Identity is shaped by people, places and experiences”.
Discuss this statement, showing how composers of texts represent their ideas in relation to identity. In your response you must refer to Othello and one other related text. Identity is a key theme and issue in Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello. A characters identity is the overall essence and how the character is viewed by the audience and in this particular play, factors such as people, places and experiences show that identity can be influenced and changed by these such things. In Othello, conflict ultimately arises from the scheming of the evil Iago, a person changing his rational view on the world. Othello’s identity also can be seen to change from the noble Moor found in Venice, to the violent person, leading up to the climax of the story in Cyprus. His experience as a soldier and a black man also influences his outlook on others and life. Through use of setting, contrasting……….Shakespeare conveys the impacts these factors have on the identity change of the most important characters, Othello and Iago.

The first Act of the play takes place in Venice. This is where we see Othello at his most innocent and care free, having just married the love of his life and have not fallen into the trap that cunning Iago plans to weave. Othello is a black African prince living in a European, colour prejudiced society. Even in Venice, where Othello holds high rank in the Venetian military, differences such as the contrast in the way he speaks to the other Venetians and especially his colour difference affect Othello and start to plant the seed of insecurity and doubt in his mind, which Iago develops into a full blown jealousy. Having come from another country Othello doesn’t speak like the rest out the characters “Rude am I in my speech”, with this referring not to the harsh language he later develops from Iago, but from the changes in his tone and use of words compared to that of the Venetians. Jealousy, once consumed, will take over the mind and body, and not only hurt the people around that individual, but destroy that individual. In Othello, we see the protagonist fall guilty to jealousy, even though he has said that he doesn’t let his feelings get the better of him. Roderigo, because of love, gets jealous and ends up losing all his money. Iago, the villain in this play, falls prey to jealousy because of his pettiness from not getting a promotion and having certain suspicions that may or may not be true. In William Shakespeare’s “Othello”, Iago states, “Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on”(3.3.170-172). This quote talks about how Othello doesn’t want to know any rumors that Iago has, but this teases Othello. Othello claims it will not bother him, so Iago tells him and Othello becomes upset. The jealousy…

Shakespeare hints at jealousy from the very first act of the play, with Iago confessing his jealousy at Michael Cassio’s recent promotion to lieutenant. He asserts his opinion that Cassio is of less experience than him, with phrases such as “never set a squadron in the field” and “mere prattle without practice”. The latter phrase contains violent alliteration with the ‘p’ sound, giving the audience an insight into Iago’s frustration anger and jealousy at the fact that he was not promoted; one can almost imagine him spitting the words out in rage. These quotes may also give the reader an insight into Iago’s past, showing on the other hand that he had experience ‘in the field’ of battle, and that he had, judging by his evident disappointment at lack of promotion, served for quite a long time at Othello’s side. This is also shown when he states “Othello’s eyes had seen the proof at Rhodes”. This is very much Iago's scene, and we see the versatility of his linguistic gifts most clearly throughout: where Othello's poetry serves to discover beauty and wonder in the world, Iago's language is fundamentally dishonest, allowing him to seem whatever serves his purpose. while taking his new friends into his confidence about Casio's "vice"; he protests that he would rather have his tongue cut from his mouth than "it should do offence to Michael Cassio", and suggests that Cassio's conduct must have been provoked by "some strange indignity" from "him that fled". Othello sees this as covering up inexcusable violence and demotes Cassio, who believes nevertheless that he has "well approved" (that is, proved) Iago's friendship. Shakespeare adds another twist in the plot, which draws the audience in to explore the full intentions of Iago's plan. In his remarks upon “reputation”, Iago comes as close as he ever does to revealing his true opinions: the notion of deserved reputation or integrity does not…
