Act 1, Scene 1: Venice, A Street at night.
Iago complains to Roderigo about Othello giving the promotion to Cassio. They go to Brabantio’s house and claim his daughter has run off to marry Othello. Roderigo and Brabantio go and search for Desdemona.
Scene 2: Venice, outside the Sagittary.
Cassio tells Othello the Senate needs him to go to Cyprus to fight the Turks. Brabantio finds Othello and accuses him of stealing his daughter. They decide to ask the Duke’s opinion.
Scene 3: Venice, the council Chamber.
While the Duke is discussing war tactics, he is interrupted by Othello, Brabantio, Iago and Roderigo. Brabantio states that Othello has stolen his daughter, through the use of spells and witchcraft, and orders his …show more content…
Othello agrees to let Cassio visit him, after Desdemona asks about him. Iago plants suspicion in Othello's mind concerning Cassio's and Desdemona's relationship, and warns Othello about jealousy. Othello assures Iago of Desdemona’s faithfulness, but then asks him to set Emilia to watch Desdemona. Iago advises him to observe how Desdemona pleads for Cassio’s reinstatement. Othello becomes suspicious, Desdemona enters and Othello says he will not believe it. Emilia steals Desdemona’s handkerchief and gives it to her husband. Iago plans to plant it in Cassio’s lodgings. Othello is angry at Iago for suggesting his wife might be adulterous and threatens him to find proof. Iago says that Cassio would talk of Desdemona in his sleep and that he has Desdemona’s handkerchief. Othello tells Iago to murder Cassio, and plans to murder Desdemona himself, he appoints Iago as his lieutenant.
Scene 4: Cyprus, a room in the castle
Desdemona asks the clown to find Cassio so she can tell him that she has spoken to Othello on his behalf. Desdemona tells Emilia she is unhappy she lost her handkerchief. Othello asks for the handkerchief and Desdemona lies and tells him it is not lost. Cassio asks Desdemona to persuade Othello to take him back again, but Desdemona tells him to wait because Othello is behaving strangely. Othello, shocked, goes into an epileptic fit. Cassio enters but Iago tricks him into leaving. Othello awakes and Iago convinces him to hide and eavesdrop on a conversation between Cassio and Iago. Othello wrongly thinks Casio is talking about his wife when Cassio tells of his relationship with Bianca. Bianca enters, thinking the handkerchief Cassio gave her is from another woman, Othello recognizes the handkerchief as his own. Bianca leaves and Cassio follows her. Othello confides to Iago that he will murder Cassio and Desdemona, Iago makes him forget any remaining affection to his wife. Iago suggests to Othello that he strangle Desdemona in bed, whilst Iago will take care of Cassio that night. Lodovico enters and bring Othello a letter from Venice, asking Othello to come back and instating Cassio as governor of Cyprus. Desdemona says she is glad and Othello strikes her.
