Here is the description of Othello in the play. Othello has certain traits which make him seem naïve and unsophisticated compared to many other people. He is of strong character. He is very proud and in control of every move and situation. The control is not only of power but of the sense of his being who he is, a great warrior. The nature of his character is of a dark man. Not only because he is black, but also because his whole person is mysterious. He is mysterious in that he believes there is magic brewing everywhere. Othello has a trusting nature. Othello’s character is brought to light by a horrible situation by a deceitful devil named Iago. 1.) How important is the concept of race in this play?

It is one of the factors that Othello feels makes him an outsider, someone who is on the periphery of social and political power. The doubt that he experiences is, in part, due to the fact that he is black. In the play, when Rodrigo and Iago call out to Brabanito to inform him that his “white ewe” is being topped by a “black ram”, is where it actually sets the theme for the rest of the novel. If not for Othello’s race, he might be immune, or at least more resistant to Iago’s manipulation. Othello is keenly aware that his skin color creates a barrier that he can never completely overcome in his dealings with the

A play dominated by deep, extreme interactions between characters and audience is The Tragedy of Othello: The Moor of Venice, written by William Shakespeare in 1406. The intense relationships between characters are a focus point of which honesty and deception are at the base within this play. Iago uses Roderigo, Emilia and Cassio as pawns, tools, and guides - the interlocking pieces in his puzzle to eventually strike at Othello and unleash the devastating horrors of jealousy, in order to denounce him from upper society and loss of vital respect and reputation.…

Because Othello has defied his position in society as a black man by proving himself through his talents and his honourable actions, he is still discriminated by Iago, who voices out his disdain for him openly. He uses the symbolism of a “Barbary horse” to represent Othello. This is extremely demeaning to Othello, a man of royal lineage who has carried himself off with only the utmost integrity and honour. This shows that although he has many merits and is regal in his actions and demeanour, he is still associated with the stereotype that all blacks are barbarians. Furthermore, the sibilance within “the gross clasps of a lascivious Moor” highlights the sinister and libidinous traits that Blacks are stereotypically known to possess. This forms a disgusting…

Shakespeare shows this trust and honesty through the interaction and relationships between Othello and Iago, Iago and Cassio, and the interaction between Brabantio and Iago/ Rodriego. This is not only shown as a hidden trust between two characters but also with the use of the word trust and honesty within the text.…

A couple of months ago my parents hired a magician for my little brother’s birthday party. Ivan the Incredible specialized in optical illusions with cards and coin tricks, which was a little hard for the group of eight year olds to grasp but most entertaining for myself and several adults. When I began reading Shakespeare’s Othello, Iago’s antics reminded me of Ivan the Incredible and how someone can trick you to believe something is true when it really isn’t. Appearance versus reality plays a huge role in Othello, and constantly surfaces as a main theme in Iago’s magnificent ability and experience in deceiving fellow characters causing an extra twist to the plot. Iago is the main manipulator of reality to change the appearance of a situation into something that benefits him. This is seen when Iago tricks Othello into believing Cassio and Othello’s wife, Desdemona are having an affair. Iago tricks Roderigo into killing Casio through his manipulation of reality. Also, Iago thickens the lie by planting a gift from Othello to Desdemona in Cassio’s house and also pretends to have a conversation about Desdemona with Cassio while Othello look on but cannot hear. Which of course, are all actions needed to be taken for his master plan to work out correctly.…

    Othello Analysis

The tragedy Othello is filled with a complex web of separate conflicts that are connected with each other. The external conflicts are very obvious, such as Iago trying to replace Cassio as lieutenant and Othello's belief in Desdemona's affair. In addition to these conflicts, however, many characters in the play also face their own internal conflicts in which they have to make a choice between two opposing forces. An excellent example of this internal conflict can be found in analyzing Roderigo. Roderigo's love for Desdemona creates conflict because he faces the choice of going back to Venice since he has no money left, or staying in Cyprus because he wants to pursue Desdemona. In more general terms, Roderigo deals with the conflict of desire and trust against rationality and common sense. Although Roderigo's conflict is internal, he is influenced by people and things outside himself that causes him to take different positions on it. Iago's influence on Roderigo's decisions also emphasizes the play's theme as a whole which deals with the consequences of vulnerability.…
