The Ottonian manuscript paintings were based on two artistic sources the Carolingian manuscripts and Byzantine manuscripts that were both religious and imperial image. The Ottonian manuscripts were mainly interested in the story telling of the stages of Jesus life. For example, figure 10.31Christ Blessing Emperor Otto II and Empress Theophano was mainly influenced by a byzantine work titled Christ Crowning Romans & Eudoka using a halo to identify Jesus showing the commemoration coronation. These doors were the first doors to have decoration that tell a story since close to the year of 525 which adds to the uniqueness of this piece. In figure 10.28 it shows the layout of all the events on the left side focusing on the Old testament and right side of the door on the New testament. For the left side of the door the Hebrew Bible stories are in chronological order from top to bottom and the right side vice versa in chronological order from bottom to top. Another monumental sculpture that the bronze door reminded me of was a piece in chapter 8 figure 8.5 of a Sarcophagus, this sarcophagus does tell a religious story as well, the story on the left is about Jonah and the sea monster and the right side about a baptism. The two pieces both have engravings on hard tough material that enables the viewer to see the details of the scene. Another art piece that can be compared to the bronze abbey church door is figure 7.10 of a sculpture relief at the altar of Domitius Ahenobarbus showing the events of Neptune’s marriage, a consus, and an attendant taking animals to the altar for a sacrifice.
