First, effect of the Great Depression was the large death count. One main factor, of these deaths was the dust pneumonia caused by the dust storm. A quote from the book, Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse, “Pete Guymon took ill with dust pneumonia.” [140] Another, factor of the deaths was suicide. People were killing themselves to, “end their suffering.” Finally, people in the Great Depression starved due to the lack of food and money, “We haven’t had a good crop in three years.” [16] Another, effect of the Great
Depression was the discrimination given towards families who ran from the dust. For example, when Okies fled to California the kids were treated very differently. The “Okies” had to sit on the floor, “ Okie students had to sit on the floor.” [87] The Okies because of this made their own school which then surpassed the normal schools getting all the academic awards. Also, when Okies left the dust bowl and were despised by the community. For example, “They made fun of their southern accent.” [135]
Finally, endurers of the Great Depression went bankrupt from the banks all around in America closing to preserve the United States Government's dollar worth. Farms were going bankrupt because none of their crops would grow. After, this went on for a-while the Government set up a program for farms to have money to plant crops for free, “...if the crops didn’t grow you didn’t have to pay a dime back.” [26] Fathers not being able to support their family would run away and steal food for themselves. The Great Depression was the worst economic struggle in America. The depression cost people their lives, their money, and their feeling of self worth.
