What is success? The Merriam-Webster definition states “success is the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence.” However, is this success means to all of us? Does success mean becoming famous? Becoming a millionaire? Becoming the president of the United States? Or, is success defined by more personal issues such as getting into your dream college or passing an exam that you spent weeks preparing for? Success means something different to everyone; in my opinion, it is defined from personal goals that you have set for yourself and experiences you have taken part in.

Opposing to the notion that “success is a simple function of individual merit and that the world in which we all grow up and the rules we choose to write as a society don’t matter at all,” Gladwell argues that these extraordinary people “reached their lofty status through a combination of ability, opportunity and utterly arbitrary advantage.” Gladwell uses the Beatles’ early career to describe how the only way to be “successful” is to practice ten thousand hours. According to Gladwell, Bill Gates' intelligence and privileged upbringing can certainly not be denied, but that is not what put him over the top. The school year in the US is, on average, 180 days long. In South Korea it is 220 days long. In Japan, it is 243 days long. Asian countries don't have a long summer vacation. No doubt Asian children do better in university once they immigrate to the US because they simply have had much more time to gain an education. The fact that Asian countries hold longer school sessions allows their students to gain a higher knowledge base. The way that they construct their schooling leads their students in a better direction so that when some go to other countries for job opportunities, they have a much higher chance of getting
