Genie was a young girl who was locked in a room by her father due to his belief that she was mentally retarded, however when she was discovered at 13 years old, it was too late to test this. Because Genie had never formed an attachment; her level of speech was very low and even now has not fully recovered with still social responsiveness lack.
Czech Twins, who spent their first 7 years of life locked up by their stepmother and because of their lack of attachment and social interaction they were unable to walk or use basic speech, unlike Genie the twins were fostered into a loving home with 2 sisters and at the ages of 14; they had near enough full social functioning and by 20 years old; they had above average intelligence and excellent relationships with their foster family showing the effects of privation can be reversed.

Strengths of the case studies is that they included many different experimental and non-experimental techniques which enabled them to collect a lot of data research, therefore increasing understanding of privation which can generate more research and psychological breakthroughs.
However these case studies focus on the individual which is then hard to generalise as these rare cases cannot be repeated which lacks reliability.
Genie apparently experienced mental retardation and could possibly be the reason for her lack of speech and not privation; therefore lacks validity as researchers may not be measuring what they intended
Czech Twins; a retrospective interview was taken place with the step mother, which could include human error as she is having to think back and recall what previously happened on what her memory can remember; also social desirability could be used to create a favourable impression and lie about the situation.
Hodges and Tizard 1989; a natural, longitudinal experiment studies 65 children who all had experienced privation due to bad institutional care and
