“The Pink Plastic Flamingo”
I. Introduction
A. In a recent essay, “The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History”, by Jennifer Price, she discusses her view on American culture
B. In support of her assertion, she criticizes Americans and American culture for its frivolity and ignorance and argues American culture is based on materialism to satisfy the need.
C. Jennifer Price points out the flaws in American culture in order to jolt the awareness of the reader to recognize what Americans have succumbed to.
D. Given the historic context of the essay, Price is writing to Americans to depict how American culture has yet to change.
II. First Body Paragraph
A. In her first strategy she criticizes American culture through the use of her sarcastic and ironic tone.
B. She uses this tone to articulate the development of American culture throughout the past to todays.

D. She mimics the dismissive attitude of those she is criticizing as if hunting flamingoes to extinction is of little importance
E. She never returns to the subject of the real beards, giving the false importance of the role of the fake flamingo to highlight the forgotten importance of the real living one.
F. Her title, “A Natural History” is ironic because it is not actually a natural history, it is a man-made object

I. Her sarcastic tone was to show how a simple thing such as a flamingo can become the symbol of wealth in the eyes of Americans.
