The best part of a woman’s day is the end, when she gets to take off her bra. Most women wear these constricting devices, but not many of them know the history or risks that come along with them. The brassiere was originally created to conserve metal during World War I and for cosmetic purposes, but over time has served no medical purpose and has actually caused problems for women.
The modern bra was invented in 1913 by Mary Phelps Jacob. She initially created the bra, or brassiere, for cosmetic purposes. In the beginning of the 20th century, corsets were worn by women. Corsets were a tightly fitted undergarment commonly worn by women in the Victorian era to provide support for their breasts. Jacob was irritated with the discomfort that corsets caused, but also by the support rods that poked out from underneath the fabric of her clothes.
