Overcoming Obstacles In The Journey

In The Journey the author, Duane BigEagle, creates the theme of overcoming obstacles by using description and point of view. The main character, Raoul has to travel in order to survive his illness. The short story states, “There was just enough for a child's ticket to the little town of Oklahoma.” The author shows the struggle Raoul has to face in order to find the cure to his sickness. In order for Raoul to survive. The author’s use of description shows the theme because the reader now knows the conflict Raoul and his family has the deal with in order to travel to one place to the next. Another significant example is when Raoul is on the train, and he starts having hallucinations. In the text it states, “I caught a glimpse of one man raising
a large club to strike another man whose back was turned- But then, did I really see them at all?” In other words, Raoul is having doubts about the things he is seeing, and isn’t sure that his sickness is getting worse. The inner thinking highlights the theme because Raoul is having a difficult time while on the trip to Oklahoma, and it shows again the conflict Raoul has to deal with while on his trip.
