High performing teams are essential to the success of any business. After the hard work has been put in to developing a team of the most professional employees, it is only natural to develop the team in to one that is self sufficient and highly productive. However, teams that have been driven by a leader, in most cases upper management, have been faced with strife due to the hesitancy of management giving up their power. Research has shown that in order for a team to succeed it must have clear direction and established goals. Furthermore and most importantly, it must have clear communications. The signs of a truly successful team lie in management not losing control, but gaining a well oiled machine that runs due to management’s guidance. Therefore, in order to realize a high performing team, leadership has to have set the ground work prior to releasing the team.
Developing a high performing team is a difficult task. The reason for this is due to the difficulty of establishing an interdependent team. Before a team can released to perform with minimal supervision, it must first perform optimally under guidance. What has been said and has been the reason for many failures is the lack of communication. This point can’t be expressed enough. Without the level of communication that everyone can understand and relate to, then the barriers that exist from diverse teams will only grow. So how do you create the proper level of communication?
In order for a team to reach the levels of success, they must communicate. One suggestion offered from the popular series of books “for dummies” says that high performing teams and teams in general have to meet face to face (Brounstein, 2013).
