During the ceremony, many people spoke about President Haines and the impact he has had in their lives. They praised the man he is and talked about how blessed Taylor University is to have a President who cares so deeply and works so hard for the benefit of the school and students.

After Haines’ expressed his surprise of becoming President of his alma mater during his inaugural address, he said “No one is more surprised, humbled, sobered. It’s what you do with the surprises that’s important. We were created for such a time as this.”

The announcement of Betsy DeVos to serve as commencement speaker at Bethune-Cookman University aroused many emotions. Understandably, a university president should be able to invite the U.S. Secretary of Education to speak to their students on graduation day, but this is different. This is beyond political ideology or educational philosophy.…

Now seven years from that day, Shawnigan has allowed me to understand what it means to love, it takes sacrifice. With years of immense sacrifice on part of my mother and Shawnigan, I am ready to show that love back in the best way I know possible, as prefect. I believe because of so much selfless investment in my time at Shawnigan, I can use that depth of heart to impact the lives that make up my home.…

Being a community, network, and family details my view of the “Hokie Spirit.” At Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT), I am certain that there is overwhelming support from professors and students because of the unique atmosphere I perceived when touring. While walking around the brick buildings, I felt as if all students knew each other, or that each of them had something in common. This aspect that every person who strode pass me entailed, was pride or “Hokie Spirit.” I could sense the fulfillment each individual had for attending one of the top public schools in the United States, and because of this, “Hokie Spirit” flourishes throughout the campus.…

There were many thought provoking topics discussed during class but the issues I was most intrigued by involved political strategy. I was very surprised to learn about UA’s proposed smoking ban and since have since shared this information with several friends. Like me many of them I was very surprised the school recognized the nearing possibility of marijuana legalization. I would have never expected the school to preemptively take action to solve a problem that hasn’t occurred, it also speaks to social recognition of a southern institution of changing times to come.…

The “doing of ministry” and the “being of ministry” are inextricably linked. A professor cannot successfully perform his or her duties without being completely invested in the formation and success of their students. HBCU’s are nothing without the community of students that fill their halls. The experience of the HBCU is a circular process. The institution shapes the students, and the students define and reshape the institution.…

Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…
