Certain groups of people appear to be more vulnerable and susceptible of abuse compared to others. The individuals may suffer from mental health problems or may have physical or learning disabilities, the older population tend to be more at risk of abuse as the elderly are weak and frail and cannot often defend themselves especially those with dementia.
Any group of individuals who tends to be more at risk of abuse tend and just abide with the abuser with and just accept the situation of abuse This may be due to the individuals certain medication, or shattered self-esteem and low self-expectations. Factors such as the individual’s illness, condition (mental or physical) or age tends to make them isolated. As a result of the individual feeling isolated this may lead to becoming dependent on the abuser or seeking any potential abusers for help. Social isolation is major factors such as those who are isolated tend to have abused usually have fewer social contacts than those who are not abused, this means the individual at risk cannot reach out and tell anyone about the abuse taking place, abusers would see an isolated person as an potential abuser. A victim being abuses many have a mental illness such as dementia , the victim with dementia may be a more risk as his or her intellect, memory or physical functions and cause unpredictable psychological or physical behaviour is majorly affected by this illness. Some victims may actually be unaware of the abuse or exploitation taking place, some individuals have had a childhood full of abuse and being exploited so therefore the individual may be used to abuse and view the abuse as the ‘norm’ and the Individual may not know any different this can also be the case for the abusers as the actually abuser may have been abused as a child,/ have a family history of violence. If the abuser has been subjected to abuse and abusive behaviours and have abusive role models such as parents, this way of abusive behaviour may have embedded in how the abuser treats people.
Adult carers are most at risk of becoming abusers as the stress of caring for a physically and/or mentally frail adult without adequate support could lead to the carer becoming abusive behaviour towards the adult. Caring for a vulnerable adult can be trying and frustrating as the vulnerable adult cannot understand a lot of things. This leads to the carer feeling trapped and fed-up. - The victim has behavioral problems or major changes in personality which result in repetitive behavior, wandering or aggression.
- The victim demands or needs a level of care beyond the capacity of the carer. Victim characteristics
