Public broadcasting station or PBS for short is a membership funded channel that is made to educate, inspire, create, and showcase a variety of unique experiences. There are shows that are meant to help develop children’s minds, documentaries that take the viewer through different adventures, news programs to inform of the goings on of the world, and even being able to watch journeys through dance, theatre, and music.
This was created in 1970 and has been around for 46 years, it was founded by a man named Hartford N. Gunn Jr. on October 5th 1790. According to Scholastic, the preschool period is the time of rapid growth including thinking abilities, children use symbolic thought that goes hand in hand with language and symbol use. In shows like Martha Speaks, about a dog who eats alphabet soup and has the ability to talk. Each show has five or six words that are showcased and used as the stories go on. These words are not easy such as cat, hat, or mat. Instead they are complex such as patience, compassion, and hatred; just to name a few. How can anyone forget about that purple dinosaur? Barney and Friends, this focuses on the more social atmosphere of children specializing in teamwork and getting along with others. Wishbone and Reading Rainbow let us enter worlds that were not our own, seeing such works as Shakespeare, fairytales, and entering historical times. Without even leaving the comfort of the living room couch, these shows had the ability to transport us.
Shows currently on PBS Kids range from Thomas and Friends, Bob the Builder, to Super Why. Thomas and Friends teaches that friendship is key and to always help others in need. On the Island of Sodor, Thomas and his friends help everything run smoothly, Thomas often gets in trouble for trying to be a useful engine though and with the help from his friends he gets out of sticky situations. Bob is a handyman that always has the mantra of yes, we can and fixes whatever is broken of his friends or the surrounding townsfolk.
Bob shows that construction work is a cool job and an optimistic outlook is always key. Super Why lets children look inside of a book and figure out what comes next; Whyatt, along with the super readers try to help the fairytale characters in Storytime Village.
