Pacem in Terris Summary
Pacem in Terris by Pope John XXIII

Summary

Human Dignity
Humans, being made in God's image and likeness, and blessed with intelligence and freedom, are dignified people. We have a conscience, and are given grace by God. Men are all equal in dignity, which would involve the possession and implementation of human rights, leading to recognition and respect. One must understand that their relationship with God is the very foundation of their life.

Human Rights
All human rights have three essential aspects. They are universal: that is, all people have them simply by being people, no matter who they are; inviolable: no person, group or government may violate them, no matter who they are; and unalienable: no person can ever lose or surrender his or her own human rights, no matter the circumstances. Blessed Pope John Paul II would later add a fourth characteristic to the list. They are also indivisible: no person or government can pick and choose which of them are to be recognized, as though shopping at a grocery store deli.

A society must be based on truth in order to become well-ordered, creative, and consonant with human dignity. Men must be guided by justice, and respect the rights of others and do their duties. True freedom safeguards the dignity of the human person. Peace needs to be based on an order “founded on truth, built according to justice, vivified and integrated by charity, and put into practice in freedom.”
