The focus of art changed around the year 3500 B.C. Around this time is when humans developed the first form of writing. One of the most monumental constructions known to man was built during this time. The first step pyramid was constructed for King Zoser at Saqqara, Egypt in 2650. The pyramid was built with 5 mastabas (steps) that decreased in size and they stacked one on top of the other. The pyramid was originally faced with polished limestone, but over time it weathered away. The pyramid was constructed for a resting place for the king. He had a burial chamber built inside where he was laid to rest. (Adams)
Ancient art was more focused on kings and pharaohs. The Palette of Narmer was created to represent the king’s power. Everything pictured on the palette conveys his importance, such as him being guarded by gods. The step Pyramid was built for King Zoser’s final resting place. Most artworks at this time were created for either a king or for a pharaoh. That is what was important to artists at that time in history. (Adams)
